How can you tell?

Well, I'm no expert and that (piston skirt coating) would have been my first guess. It looks like a plastic/teflon type material and the lines relate to the machining of the skirt...Have you ever had Teflon/non-stick coating peel from a pot or a pan? Very similar looking... This being said, the op "funk" clearly looks like paper? Maybe a careless mechanic either lost/left a paper towel into the motor when putting it back together?

That material is ferrous, and is the iron phosphate coating from the piston skirts. This is stage 1 of bore scoring, as the bore scoring is really collateral damage from this failure.

The coating is very thin/fine. The closest thing I've seen like it is gold leaf.

Hated to see that car go. It was a factory aerokit car with sport exhaust, M030 suspension, and sport seats.

Yeah, saw #11 reply. Seems to have thrown J R a bit of a curve. We're sorry Illini's luck was bad. Just a little puzzled by his post. What did your foriegn material end up being?

Until OP rvanhaasen comes back after doing more investigation we're just waiting. Obviously as in my case with finding piston skirt coating, there are worse things to find in a pickup tube.

Okay, will wait to hear what that stuff in his sump is.
Sorry to hear that your engine suffered the dreaded scoring and or piston damage. What size engine did you have?
