Default Surprise burnt electronics smell and then low voltage??

Hey,
Last night on the drive home, I was at a light and smelled a short burning electronics smell and then noticed a little later as I was scanning my gages that the volts were reading a bit below 12. I have a digital volt mete that I plugged in and it said 11.9 and usually says 13.9-14. Is this the regulator or alternator? Also, when I got home, I re started my car and the alternator warning came on. Any help is appreciated. i have ordered both a VR and an alternator from Pelican.

02 996 C2 Cab

Thanks,

Mitch

Could be either one of those, but you do know the voltage regulator is on the back of the alternator. So a new alternator will already have that.
I would definitely check every fuse to see if one blew. Could be what you smelled was a fuse blowing. Then you might need to check that circuit for any bad wires, shorts, etc.

Yes Sir, I was going to inspect the VR after removing the ALT and see if it smelt burnt. I will go check the fuses for sure, good call. Thanks!

Yes, the 997 has a higher amp rating but more importantly it's a good deal for a brand new alternator.

Looked at the fuses by the left kick panel. All the fuses were good. Didn't see a fuse regarding the charging system. Am I missing something? The new Alternator will be here tomorrow.

No, there are no dedicated fuses for the charging system. However, the power to the alternator is supplied by the instrument cluster, which a few fuses are assigned to.

The 997 alternator I ordered came as described and I started the removal and installation at 4pm in hopes to be finished at a descent hour. To my surprise, it took me 25 minutes. Seriously. I am a professional jet mechanic and I am pretty handy with tools. I can imagine what the dealer charges for this. It was super easy. Thanks for the help. No more low voltage. I may order a new VR an replace it on the old alternator and keep it as a spare.
