Odd sound?
Hi,
Back with more concerns...
why does my 996 engine, when cold, make a sound like lumber going through a table saw. Not constant but every few seconds. Kind of cool sound, but can’t imagine it’s a good thing.
Thanks.

Open the engine lid and listen to the SAI pump run. It runs at first start and cold engine. When the bearings start to go bad, it sounds like a buzz saw. Proper noise is a gentle hum, like a small vacuum cleaner motor. The SAI pump is on the left side of the engine bay, black and looks like a small motor with hoses coming from it.

No, bearings as in the bearing on the shaft of the fan in the SAI (Secondary Air Injection) pump that he described. Go look under the engine lid and listen

Post a video or audio of the sound. We love listening to all these different and strange 911 sounds to try to figure out what causes it. How long does the noise last? Only on cold start? Does it go away? Have you tried removing the serpentine belt to see if it’s present with the belt off (don’t run the engine with the belt off more than 60 seconds please).
