Default Triple Square transmission bit

I see lots of posts here and on RennTech about the weird XZN/triple square/serrated wrench bolt head on the T96 bell housing, but no one seems to state the specific size of the bit required to loosen it. Does anyone know it?

I have no idea....but if you go get a triple square kit, they usually come with three or four bits that covers most anything.

10mm triple square. You can buy a cheap wrench driven style, and cut it down to fit. I believe others have used low profile drivers that have worked.

It's pretty high torque. My suggestion (wish I had followed this myself) is to stop at your local SnapOn truck and buy just the single socket. I haven't "yet" come across the need for any of the others in the cheaper set I bought and couldn't get good bite with the cheap one. Likely would have worked, but it didn't "feel" right, so I resorted to borrowing (then buying) a single good one and the difference was noticeable.

It's a T45 pain in the ***...

You can buy this kit for $40 on AmazonI'm waiting on mine to show up.

I'll be selling some tools in a couple of months when I get my 996 put back together...

Its been 2 years since I did this, but are you talking about the bolt that attaches the transmission to the engine? I want to say I ordered the socket from Pelican.. or maybe Amazon. It wasn't particularly expensive (maybe like $10) and worked fine. Nothing special about it in terms of depth that I can remember.

EDIT: I just checked the pelican article - its specified in figure 9. As others have stated, 10mm. https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...on_Removal.htm

You can get one at Home Depot for $8.

Yeah I was able to find one at Pep Boys. Just needed to know the size so I didn’t have to make more than one trip.

I needed a set a few years ago, and instead of waiting for my Snap-on guy, I picked up a set from Autozone.
I’m still using them.
I rarely use them, so if I ever lose them, or break one, I‘ll probably just replace them with another Autozone set.

Some halfshaft bolts are TSquare, so a set is nice to have.

It's not a (torx) T45. The triple square is denoted XZN and the sizing is equal to the diameter of the bolt so for the bell housing you need XZN10

This is what I bought it for taking off my steering wheel. Good price and quality and covers just about any odd situation that needs it.
