Default Totaled!

Insurance company wants to total this for around $14k, witha a buyback of around $4k. Thoughts?
Car has 145k miles, with 30k on the overhauled motor. LN spin on oil filter, IMS Guardian, IMS fix, etc. Detailed mx records since I bought it.
Thinking of keeping it and naming it FrankenPorsche.

I would skip unless you want to part it out.

What was done to the motor and by who?
You can still find a decent 996 with less mile for $10-12K

Sorry about your loss....I would buy it for $4K and call norspec dismantling who probably will buy it for a premium from you as they have done with other RLers. Speak to Oleg, he is fair and will take care of everything so just make a bit more money for the totaling. Its win win....you can also part out the car which I have done but it was a lot of work.

That doesn't seem too difficult to fix. You could pull the sunroof and replace with a new roof panel (i.e. sunroof delete). It looks like it's just sheet metal damage over the door - if this is the case, this can also be fixed fairly easily. If the motor is solid, the $4k buyback is a no-brainer. If our 996's keep getting totaled at this rate, we'll have collectibles in no time!

Considering a roller to eliminate the salvage title issue. Motor was rebuilt by me (aircraft mechanic), after attending the Raby class.

I feel for you. Buy a roller. Put your motor in it. Your motor is worth more than $4k. You can find a chassis with less than 60k miles and consider it an “upgrade”. You’re an A&P, so you’ll be itching for this project over the winter.

If it were me, I’d buy it back for the engine and transmission if nothing else.
But I’d also consider building a track car.
A carbon fiber roof is $1200...
Wow, I’d end up spending the other $10K in a hurry...Bad idea!

Do you like the car? It is something you KNOW, not something that may be a clown-car. The repairs are going to be tricky, but a decent body man can sort it out. The good thing is you know the extent of the damage that caused the total, so there is no hiding something like flood damage or a bent chassis.

I would counter offer on $16,500 for diminished value, and upgrades from LN. Explain to the Ins co why you are adding $2500 to their offer. Then take the $4000 buy back, have the roof and door fixed, and you are back in biz. There is no way the body work will go over $3500 from a decent indie shop. $9k for a branded title. You get the devil you already know back in your hands. Works for me.

Good excuse to do a sunroof delete with a new roof panel. Can you argue the car's value at higher than 14k? With an overhauled engine I'd try to get 16+ for it, then with the 4k buyback you'd have more money for repairs/upgrades.

Ouch! That's a pretty nasty bump on the head of that car. How much did the rebuilt motor cost you? We all know the money is in the motor on these cars and so you may have a solid case to appeal to the insurance agency for more money. Think about it. If not, I'd take the money and buy back the car. Then resale it as a track car or something. You could probably come out closer to $20K.

In re the engine, I stopped counting at $8k. Probably around $10k, with the rework by LNE and parts. I've been all over this car and know it very well. Thanks for the comments, I'll keep the updates going.

Close to $20K? That's nuts!

May seem that way, but think about this scenario -

1. He let's the insurance agency total it out for $14,000
2. He then buys it back for $4,000. That leaves him $10,000 and the car.
3. He resells it as a "salvage/rebuild title" vehicle with functional motor for $10,000ish. In the end, walks away from the car with $20,000 and then goes and buys another '99 996 for around $15,000 and has $5,000 left over to take his family to Disney world. It's magical!
