May seem that way, but think about this scenario -
1. He let's the insurance agency total it out for $14,000
2. He then buys it back for $4,000. That leaves him $10,000 and the car.
3. He resells it as a "salvage/rebuild title" vehicle with functional motor for $10,000ish. In the end, walks away from the car with $20,000 and then goes and buys another '99 996 for around $15,000 and has $5,000 left over to take his family to Disney world. It's magical!

I can buy a running 996 for $10-12k (see them frequently) with no title issues or damage. I don't see it!
With that said, I'd still buy it back from the insurance co.
