It's been several years ago and I don't remember what he said was the exact amount of time between overfilling the oil and causing severe damage to the motor. I don't believe it was instant death, but apparently an excessive amount of oil was entering the combustion chamber and was smoking like a freight train. He had it checked out, but the service cost wasn't something he was willing to fork out. He sold it as a roller. The 997 was beautiful. Guards red with tan interior. Very clean, but the owner made a horrible mistake that cost him the car.

^^What "book"^^? - not questioning the validity of the claim per se', but I always question when people sight unspecified (yet authoritative) sources... So when you say "The Book", do you mean A) The Bible (B) Jake Raby's as yet unpublished tome on everything M96 (C) The Owners manual (D) The Bentley M96 repair manual etc. etc. etc....

Mea Culpa! I was sure I read that somewhere and still believe I did. Thought it was in the owners manual but checked page 16 and page 172. Nope! Checked the Bentley book...nope! Both do say: "It is normal for your engine to consume oil." Then goes on to what can affect i.e.: "quality and viscosity, speed, climate, road conditions as well as the amount of dilution and oxidation of the lubricant."

Because mine uses some oil it is possible that my brain misinterpreted the information I have read. Kind of a mental finger cross.

However, on page 172 (owners manual) it says the following: "If the vehicle is driven at a high rate of speed, climate conditions are warm, and the load is high, the oil should be checked more frequently, as driving conditions will determine the rate oil consumption."

Sorry, based on information I have my previous post cannot be verified and, at this point, should be considered as inaccurate. I will keep looking or have myself committed!

Your Honor I plead stupidity!

**UPDATE**

Had the car checked out by a local Porsche specialist, he said the noise is completely normal. Told me that a lighter weight oil like the Mobil 1 exacerbates the sound, but if I move to a heavier oil the sound will go away (not trying to start an oil debate here). In either case, I am relieved that the car got a clean bill of health. I have put 1200 miles on it already since buying 4.5 weeks ago and will continue to daily this car for the foreseeable future!

Did he conduct a more thorough, invasive test like a bore scope inspection of all cylinder bore especially #6? Did he remove the oil pan to inspect for oil laden debris? Has the oil been sent for analysis from companies like Blackstone? And lastly, did he run a scan of the ECU for cam deviations and manometer reading to determine how the cylinders are performing?

^^^Agree - I also had my ticking sound checked out by a local 'Porsche specialist' who told me there was no issue and I should just use a heaver weight oil. After doing a cylinder bore inspection myself I found it was caused by scored cylinders.

No, he did not, nor did I request an inspection that thorough. I will have the oil sent out to Blackstone next oil change. The car does not exhibit initial symptoms of bore scoring, such as soot in one of the tailpipes, irregular oil consumption (0.2L in the 1,200 miles that I have had it), etc. I looked at the video you posted when you found your scoring and my tapping does not sound like what is posted, from either side of the car. I will continue to enjoy it and regularly service/maintain it with a Porsche specialist, without making myself overly paranoid about every quirk. I feel becoming too worried will take away the enjoyment of owning this car.

Exactly! Bore scoring is a common problem with these motors. I think the problem gets overshadowed by the IMS horrors. The tell tale sign is the clicking/tapping sound that is regularly misdiagnosed as a noisy lifters. Many of the so called "porsche specialists" will tell you just to run heavier oil, but that's just a like brushing the dust under the rug. Until you correctly removed the cancer, you'll continue to have the problem that will progressively get worse until it's too late. A bore score inspection using a bore scope is a pretty standard practice in mechanics. I don't mean to scare the OP, but I think it would be wise to rule out the problem.
