What's a good source for OEM shocks? 2003 base coupe.

If you really want OEM Porsche shocks try SunSet Porsche, AutoAtlanta Porsche, Sun Coast Porsche, Pelican Parts or Warehouse33. The original shocks are equivalent to Bilstein B4. I went a step up and did Bilstein B6. Very pleased with the quality, ride and handling. Believe it or not, I ordered them at AutoZone and for a reasonable price.

When I rebuilt my struts with the new shocks, I got all new stuff for the strut towers from AutoAtlanta, including the upper strut bearings. It was all fairly easy to do.

I'm looking for a nice smooth ride around town, not harsh, and I'm not going to be tracking the car.

B4 or B6?

The B6 is referred to as a sport shock, as opposed to the OE B4 equivalent. My OE shocks had hydraulic oil, and that is what blew out of the seals. The Bilsteins are gas. With the B6 - No harsh ride, nice and smooth. No lowering and used my original springs.

Not doubting that the B6 is an upgrade, even the B4 is an upgrade over a blown OEM strut. However, you may have a bit of a misunderstanding about your suspension: the Bilstein gas charged units do have oil in them, they have a nitrogen charge instead of air which keeps the oil under pressure, even when under load, that minimizes foaming.

Here's a link to the shocks I have on the website.

I just replaced mine with the Bilstein B6 front and rear, top bearing and associated parts, along with inner and outer tie rods and drop links. After an alignment it rides like a new car.

"as opposed to the OE B4 equivalent"

OE shocks are Bilstein B4 (not "equivalent"...). B6 is refered to as "heavy duty"... B8 is "sport" (designed for use with shorter, stiffer "sport springs").

I know I'm taking a beating on this...here is the B6 description from the Bilstein link I put in above:

"Bilstein B4 dampers are classed as a replacement damper, this means they are a direct replacement shock absorber of the original factory fitted shocks. In some cases however oil shock absorbers are fitted as standard on some vehicles so the B4 is effectively an upgrade as its a gas pressurized damper. These dampers are painted Black.

Bilstein B6 is an uprated shock absorber and is sometimes know as Bilstein B6 Sport. These have been extensively developed to give a sporty ride without lowering your vehicle. Generally they are a mono tube high pressure gas shock absorber meaning consistent performance. These dampers are painted yellow."

My limited understanding is the OE shocks are oil filled and not Nitrogen gas pressurized. When I stated the "equivalent", I meant in terms of dampening/compression rates on the B4, but as Bilstein states - the B4 is effectively an upgrade from OE as its a nitrogen gas pressurized damper. So it is different from OE. Whatever the case may be, I do like the ride and handling of my car with the B6's. And that simply was my point.

Fair enough Joe! It's always been my understanding that the OE shocks are made by Bilstein for Porsche and that they are indeed B4's... Perhaps B4 "equivalent" is more accurate.
