Default 3.4 Motor Differences - 1999/2000 vs 2001

Silly question perhaps.. but was there any difference between the 2001 3.4 compared to the 1999 and 2000 model years?

Previously I drove a stock 2000 C2 and the motor sounded very pronounced, that high pitch ziiiiing like the early 2.5 Boxsters at low revs with a very loud induction roar at high revs. Drove a stock '01 Carrera 4 yesterday and the engine note seemed much more muted compared to the earlier 996's, could hardly hear anything below 4k, but still made a nice howl at the top of the rev range. I just ask because I MUCH prefer the more visceral engine note, if there is indeed a difference, and it will play into which year I purchase.

So is my mind playing tricks on me, or did Porsche make minor changes during the 3.4 engine life that might have made it more "refined" toward the end ??

How can you say no if you don't know?
Did both cars have bone stock exhaust systems and air intakes, are you positive?

Lol..

They were both low mileage, stock examples. 99% positive.

The stock 996 is very quiet. Almost too quiet (as car reviewers at the time noticed).

There was probably an aftermarket air intake tube and exhaust modification one the loud one (such as Gundo hack).
