Default Valet question

When you guys valet do you ask to have it kept up front? And if so what do you tip the guy to do so? I am not sure what the proper way to go about this is. I want it kept up front because I don't need some kid red lining my car while I am eating dinner lol.

here is some great advice: don't let valets touch your Porsche. Ask them if you can pay them and park it yourself out front.
Ever seen Ferris Buellers day off? I was that kind of valet when I was 16...I would take any nice car for a 10 minute or more "test drive", not some thing I want done with my cars.

I didn't even think of that, I just assumed he/she would have to park it. I figured I would let them move it to the front spot while I watched. Ok so I pull up to the valet and say "Hey man can I park this right up front?" How much do I tip them for that?

I think the amount of tip depends on the area. If in Beverly Hills it will be different from Long Beach.
Also what does parking normally cost there if any?
Even just starting a Porsche let alone moving it by an inexperienced person can result in lots of damage.

Think that will buff out hahahahahah. Good point on area! I love going to California, I get to see many fellow Porsche owners, not many here in RI.

I had friends in high school that worked as valets, Do not let them touch your car!
You don't ask, you hand him a $20.00 park it and tell them nicely to keep an eye on it for you.

If only Johnny Irish was still around. He’d have all the right answers. Don’t valet. Park it on your own and throw the kid a sawbuck.

Even then, do you leave the key? Here's why I ask...The wife and I were somewhere near 808Bill at an upscale hotel. One day we came out on the way to go snorkel and there was a Ferrari of some sort sitting immediately in front of the valet area. As I walked up one of the valets jumped in fired it up and burped the throttle several times and quickly shut it off. I asked when he bought his new car. He looked pretty sheepish. Not sure I would want that to happen to my car. However, much better than a possible joyride as discussed above. For me if going somewhere that involves a valet...take the Rav4!

My issue is more with the fact that a lot of people don’t know how to drive a stick properly. Riding the clutch or stalling and restarting it multiple times is not what I want done to my car. I went thru this with my kids when they wanted to learn to drive a stick. We took the 911 out and after a few minutes it was just too painful.

I haven't had any problems with valet on my 99 Coupe, But it's a Tip, I would be a LOT more hesitant with my 6MT. I just pull up leave it running and they always park it out front near the valet station so they can watch it (and probably think they will get a bigger tip that way). When I come back they don't even have to get it, it's right there, they just hand me the keys, I throw them a 5 spot and drive off.. (but this is in Bama).

^^ The problem is, unless you have a recording and surveillance system, you don’t know how they drove the car. If they were imbeciles, the could start the car and redline is park or neutral.

I’ve done valet on some of my cars in the past, but with my current 911, I just don’t want to take the risk, however large or small it is.

The Valet will probably say he didn't let the Lexus SUV park in front, and it cost 3x as much as your 996.

Its not about cost, its about the delicacy of the car. I don't need some punk kid raving the crap out of it. My other cars are also 3-4 times as much, but they also aren't Porsches so the valet isn't going to try and beat the crap out of them...
