Default MAF question - How to test a potentially bad brand new one...

HI everyone - I cracked my oil filler tube and ordered the replacement, not too bad a job thanks to all the info on this site, took about 2 hours but its done.

I also ordered a new MAF sensor also as I was getting the misfire CEL. I replaced the plugs and coils and was still getting random CEL misfire codes. I had the oil filler tube taped together and after I broke it I started getting misfire CEL.

Anyways - I put the MAF sensor in and car would immediately start and die. It was a BOSCH unit- identical to the old one. Same PN, same everything. Got it on Ebay.

I put the old one back in and it started right up and it runs very good now - so must be the cracked pipe had something to do with it.

Anyways - how can you test a MAF?

Don't cheap OBDII units display MAF readings? Maybe compare the values new vs. old?

Or does the car not run with the old one at all?

If so I'd return it to the seller, sounds faulty

Shy of using Durametric to check the MAF sensor values or an advanced OBDII reader, about all you can do is check for continuity with a multimeter. The MAF sensor is a heated circuit, meaning that voltage is applied and the sensor wire becomes heated so that the amount of air flowing past the sensor is measured by how much the sensor wire is cooled by passing air. So I don't know how one could be checked out of the box and on the bench. Since the old one works, chalk it up to buying crap off E-bay. It is probably not a real Bosch part but a cheap knock off part from China.

Yes they do. You can get a cheap bluetooth dongle ELM327 and an APP (TORQUE) for a smart phone to display MAF reading and any other ODBII value on your smart phone..

Unhook the battery let the computer reset then fire it backup (30 min) Do an egas reset as well. (Is it an egas car) I recently replaced my maf and after similar symptoms this cleared up issues. These cars have stored mapping and it’s good to recalibrate throttle periodically

Free and easy to do. It will reset radio, window presets etc.

Should be tested on a fully warmed up idling engine. 1.1-1.3v signal. 15-18kg/hr
