ok - what about these cupholders? obviously something has to move (like the a/c control unit - it looks like everything just gets moved down a slot - will that work?

Those are the stock cup holders that came with my 01 996. I pulled them out and put the AC controls there.. I have them in my closet, maybe I should sell them on e-bay.

I really don't see why they wouldn't fit a '99, the center layout is the same isn't it?

You would have to move the AC down to the bottom where the tray is, there is a different trim to cover the AC that slopes in on the bottom to contour to the lower level.

I have the trim too

It will fit a pre 2002 without PCM or DSP. Your a/c display gets relocated to the slot just above the shift lever. Where your a/c was is the new place for the holders.

PCM is the navigation unit. DSP is Digital sound processing. These 2 items take up place in the dash so if you have them you have no space to retrofit the cupholders in the link.

Penguinking,

e-mail me your address. I'll ship out the cupholders to you. If you are not going to be replacing the bottom tray you don't need the trim.

I'll let you know what the shipping is and you can mail me back a check when you get them.

The only cost to you for these cup holders is a Rennlist membership... join now and they are yours free.

Peace,
Rob

We've used a VW cupholder in a lot of our 996s and 986s. It was available on the B4 Passat (94-97) and mounts to the center console on the passenger side. It folds out of the way when not in use, and looks totally stock.

VW Part #: 3A1 862 531 01

It's about $50 CDN.

Hate to tell you but you will see an Audi logo on the cupholders in the link when you see them.

I coined the word cupholderectomy a few years ago when I removed them from a local 2001 Boxster.

I gave mine to someone on this forum that felt cupholderally challenged.
