SPEC 996 - Ready for the Season
First DE and Club Race coming up at Lime Rock later this week. Wish I could say the weather is cooperating, but it's not. Car is well sorted now, so just did some maintenance (Joe Gibbs oil, new filter, fresh front rotors, new pads and fresh brake fluid) and a few minor tweaks. Installed a Gurney flap on the wing and raised it using Demon Speed uprights. Wing should be more efficient (more downforce and less drag) and I can finally see out the back window with the additional 4" height. Can't wait to get on track!
Season prep done, time to get out there.
Home Depot angle aluminum + 3M 2-sided body tape
3-M tape is incredibly strong.
Gained visibility out the rear with taller uprights.
Demon Speed makes these.

Great work on the wing! The visibility thing always bugged me. On the wing angle, I found that less is more but your experience may very.
Few people realize how quick these cars are around the track. What weight are you at?

What are the differences between the spec and the regular 996? Besides the exhaust and wing.

Spec class, 996 lightly (relative) modified to compete against similarly prepped stockish vehicles. Makes it harder to buy speed.

Also, what about oil system mods, such as swirl pots? Isn’t the stock swirl pots a known 996 m96 deficiency?

Thanks for all the comments and questions, I'll try to put together the answers. The Lime Rock PCA Club Race last weekend was a blast, and although there were no other Spec 996s, there were lots of quick H,I and J class cars with similar performance, so there was a lot of competition in the Yellow run group. The car ran exceptionally well, and I had a fast lap of 0:58.67 - a personal best and I finally broke the 1 minute barrier!! Qualified 7th for the first sprint race and finished 3rd overall. Started 4th in the second sprint and ended up 6th or 7th I believe. (Got smoked on a restart and was about 12th for a lap or two but let's say I 'got by' 6 cars in the lap following the restart - not pretty but hey). The raised wing (Demon Speed provided these) made a big difference in both performance - the wing is now in clean air and is pretty flat, and in safety - I had a clear mirror shot of activity behind me when I needed it. The custom exhaust (KMC in Lawrence MA) is fabricated from SS tubing (scavenging design with increasing diameter pipe after the OE exhaust header) and off the shelf Magnaflow mufflers (no CAT). It adds considerable torque up to about 6800RPM, where it tapers off rapidly when compared to an open exhaust. This works well for me - the light weight (2710 lbs without driver) makes the car very quick in the corners and the added torque helps it squirt out of the turns really fast. The battles on the track were classic fast in the turns (me) vs. fast on the straights (the heavier 3.6L cars). Lots of video footage showing these battles and the struggle to get an opening for a pass! Murphyslaw 1978 - the car has the LN engineering .5Q deep sump and X50 baffle for oiling improvements. Slakker is right - this setup beats any stock 2004-5 GT3, and many track prepped ones as well.
Warmed up in the afternoons.
All these 3.6L 996s in my way in the turns!! AIM was down - lost OBD feed apparently.
Setting up a pass on LRP's infamous downhill with close observation from behind (see mirror). It worked!
