He wants to open it to check for debris, grinding or cutting would lead to metal dust getting inside so making it harder to know if that was from the engine or the cutting process.

I know it's fiendishly creative, but...I use an oil filter cutter.

Dremel tool, sawzall, or even a can opener will work.

Right, but using a rotary tool or a reciprocating saw is going to introduce a ton of debris.

Depending on your insurance plan, buying the correct tool is probably cheaper than your copay for having a finger reattached because "tried to cut a slippery thing with my Sawzall..."

Lots of tools available...but not inexpensive. Google "oil filter cutter".

Is that chain pensioner pad material or a finger nail?

I use one of these. Plan to eventually make a proper cutter, but in the meantime this works great. Cutter

I use an oil filter cutter. I think it was around $50.00.

I bought mine mail order from a speed shop catering to the drag racing crowd.

One thing to add to this thread.....I suggest that you wear leather gloves when opening the oil filter/handling it. I have an opener and it leaves a razor sharp edge. I had to move some of the metal of the filter out with a screwdriver so the filter media could clear it (it was dented in a bit from opening), my hand slipped and I cut a small chunk of my right hand index finger tip off.....but it was hanging on. Went to the doc in the box, got it sewed up and most of the feeling has come back a year later....but not all of it.

Wouldn't want that to happen to anyone else. I'm sure I'm not the first.

Sorry to hear Paul. How's the 996? That day at LNE was a lot of fun, but the drive from the MCD's to Momence luckily didn't land any of us in the slammer!
