Default Spare tyre won't hold air - what now?

Hey all,

The spare in my 04' 996 C2 refuses to hold air... I've pumped it up to the specified 60PSI twice now and twice its just gone flat.Fairly sure its just age being 14 years old and being un-used for so long (luckily).

Anyway, my question surrounds what others have done now that the original Continental tyre size 105 / 95 / 17R is not available anymore? Can the collapsible from the GT3, GT2, C4S etc. be installed on the C2 rim?

Or has anyone found a replacement sized tyre or a spare from a different car that fits? I could try and source another spare but it might just end the same way.

I do have roadside assist but i'd still like to have a spare for piece of mind/just in case...

Pic for reference:

Cheers!

Not sure if this will work but Continental does offer (at least in the States) a 115/95-17

Guessing the difference between 105 and 115 should be marginal and the tyre might even still fit in the bag... hopefully!

Thanks, wonder if anyone has tried it?

Have not tried it but my tire cover/bag is very tight to my tire and the 115 is 1 1/2" larger in dia.. I have never checked the tire pressure of my spare since I am not sure the flat tire would fit back in the car anywhere??

There was another thread that said that neither the front or rear fit in the frunk

The only way I could see a wheel fitting would be in the back with both rear seats folded down, surly it fits somewhere if there is a spare to install??

I carry a can of fix a flat, but I hope I never have to use it, as it totally gunks up the rim.
its for emergency last ditch only

Assuming all these products such as slime and fix a flat are just temporary solutions?

Really just considering removing the spare for more frunk space

Yes slime and fix-a-flat are for temporary and small leaks ONLY. I have seen rims eaten through from it being left in the wheel for a long time. Especially aluminum. My son bought a jeep 4x4 that 2 tires keep going flat, he had 4 new tires instaledl and the installer said they had fix-a-flat in them, now all 4 won"t hold air, They have pin holes all in the rims!! He has to buy 4 new rims !!

As an ex-tire guy, any of the "fix-a-flat" products leave an ammonia-like fluid in the tire that we referred to as "baby poo". They make changing the tire truly unpleasant, and prevented patches from adhering to the inside of the tire.

Have you tried to figure out why it is not holding air? Could just be the valve needs to be replaced, or the valve core. Or maybe a tire shop could dunk it and see where it is leaking. If it is leaking from the tire, they might just be able to patch it from the inside and you are good to go.

Might be cheaper and easier just to buy a used spare on eBay. I just did a search there are many for sale for $100-250.
