How Bad is It???

As others have said, I'd want to know why I was 5 qts low. I would have added 1 quart, waited, then checked oil level, repeat. Dumping 5 qts of oil in without checking interim levels could lead to an overfill situation - you don't want that either. Hope you solve your mystery. Good luck.

My new to me 2003, with 84k when I bought it had it right around two months now. I went from I'm loving this car to Oh My God - please don't let this be catastrophic. Was driving home the other night and I heard a tapping coming from the engine compartment. Even though I'm not a wrench-turner even I know that tapping sounds from the engine isn't good. Got home and parked - haven't driven the car since. The next morning I go to check the oil and this is what I see in the oil spout. I check the oil level and the dip stick is dry. I had purchased oil for an oil change that I had scheduled for the weekend. Five quarts of oil went in - yes five quarts of oil. No signs of dripping or leaks. I hadn't been driving it everyday and again no signs of leaking.
Talked to my indy Porsche guy and he is out of town - he will take a look at it on Thursday. How bad is this?
Please don't kick me because I'm already down.!!!
Foamy/creamy substance.

was car on flat ground and been left standing for 10 or 15 mins, do you have correct dipstick ie is it long enough could have been lost and replaced with a shorter one from another car. See if you can borrow one from another 996.

You got oil in your coolant tank. You have mayo in your filler tube. You are "missing" 5L of oil. Do you have coolant in your sump? How much oil really is missing? You won't know until you drain it and get an oil analysis.

A word of caution when checking your oil...
I recently bought a '99 Boxster that the PO claimed was completely run dry of oil so he dumped about 10 quarts in and still had nothing showing on the dipstick. He decided to sell the car cheap w/out a thorough analysis of his problem.
I had my suspicions when the dash light showed the oil level was full. I bought the car for cheap because the PO was too wrapped up in the horror stories about these engines to do a sanity check.
It turned out the dipstick tube had broke, so the dipstick was just being pushed out into the engine compartment. Of course it didn't show an oil level. Draining several gallons of oil from the engine, replacing the tube assembly and a fresh oil change did wonders for an "oil starved" engine.

The crust around the tank trough indicates coolant overflow.
Go buy a new BLUE cap, part # ending in 004 or higher.
Suck as much coolant out of the reservoir as you can and pour it into a glass jar and let it settle to see if any fluid separation happens.
Buy the correct coolant from VW or Porsche for top up/refill to eliminate the possibility of gelling from incompatibility.
Explain how you checked your oil.
IE:
Cold, First thing in morning before starting etc...
As others have indicated the “Mayo” is normal for cold weather short trips with these cars.

The 996 cluster also has a low oil level warning light, per the following illustration. A cursory search failed to unearth just how low the car needs to be on oil to trigger the light; seems like 5 quarts low ought to have been sufficient. Anyone know the minimum oil level/amount beyond which the warning should be displayed?

I would drain the coolant out of your engine and check for mixing. Then change the oil filter and check it. You should have still had 4 quarts of oil which should have been enough to protect the engine depending on how hard it was driven. Oil/ coolant mixing on the filler cap is an indicator of head gasket failure but that would also be accompanied by white smoke from the tail pipe. It also never hurts to replace the aos, flat six innovations said it is a common point of failure and recommend replacing regardless of if has gone bad
