Default Supra or stay with my 996?

My dad is the original owner of a 1998 Twin Turbo Supra, Targa Top, 6 speed, all original. He said he would never sell it. It has just over 96k miles. He recently said he would sell it to me for $30k. But I would have to sell my 996. What would you do if you were in my situation?

On your death bed, will you think back more fondly of a Toyota or a Porsche?

Supra way more likely to appreciate right? I'm not really familiar with the Supra market but isn't that car worth more than 30k?

Go with the he Supra, market value for these are quite high and they are very rare.

Enjoy!

Owned both , traded in TSupra, when the kids came along, still miss it today. Owned 4 generations of Supra's extremely reliable.
wanted a 944 bad in late 83, but dealer allotment was spoken for, went with 83 Supra, which at that time was Import car of the year.
Awesome car, wasn't a 944 but it was very reliable and capable.

The last gen Supra's were the height of Japanese engineering, ads and articles comparing to Ferrari's and 991Tubo's at minimal cost. They had the spec's but not the heritage.
Few mods, not terribly expensive and that car is a xWing fighter. you can quickly be in TT996/997 Territory. Handles great, Just that things are dated, but can be updated.

Or you can keep/restore it to stock and have a appreciating asset unlike the standard 996.

Original ones are becoming more rare, so might be worth it to do unless your 996 is daily driver.
Supra can easily be daily driver, but diminishes value.
If it is what you say, trade him for your 996 and take the rest that is owed and ask him to put it in his will.

TT Supra to be honest. Worse case scenario you sell the Supra down the road for more money and get a newer P car if you feel so inclined.

Supra. Those cars are rare and the chance to own one is hard to come by.

Supra unless you're attached. I wouldn't do it personally as I've spent almost 2 years on my 996, but it's not a crazy switch if you're talking about picking up an appreciating, reliable & fast family-tradition car. It's something you & your dad can enjoy talking about in the years ahead if nothing else.

It seems there's more to the story than meets they eye...? Does your dad need the money? Is he sick? Why the sudden change of heart from "never sell it" to "you can have it for $30k"? In other words, if there's not some pressing need for him to sell it right away, why not just say "you hang on to it and enjoy it dad, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it". If there is a pressing need, and you want to help him out, then sure - you can't really go wrong...I'm pretty sure 996's will be available at similar prices to what they are now for quite some time... Good luck

Supra for sure.. I sold my 94 TT 6 speed hardtop about 3 years ago and am still kicking myself for letting it go. I sold it when I purchased my CL65 I then purchased the Gallardo and then sold the CL65 and picked up the C4S.. I love all the cars that I owned but I miss the supra more then any of the cars I have sold.. And it is way harder to get back into a supra now then the other cars. I would actually pickup another supra if I had the garage space and thought I would be able to drive it (still have a complete fuel system, clutch, boost logic 76mm single kit and an AEM stand alone for the car.. Hanging on to the fact that one day I will purchase another one and build it up)..

Edit: Also look at the cars for sale right now.. If you like the supra then it is stupid not to get it from your dad especially since it is below market value. If you buy it and you dont love it or want back in a 996 you could easily sell the supra and pickup a nice 996 or even 997 for the money you will get out of the Supra.. Its a great car and very hard to find a stock un-modified car for sale.. These will only continue to go up in value as they become more rare..

No little boy ever said "I want to own a Supra someday."... I know I said that about the Porsche.

The toyota 2JZ engine is legendary for making big power and reliability. The M96 is legendary for exploding if looked at the wrong way.
