GPS and Backup Camera

GPS and Backup Camera
I love my 2001 Cabrio but the visibility with the top up out of the back window is poor. Also the lack of a GPS is a problem.
I just installed the Garmin unit which also has a backup camera option.
I made a bracket that places it over the CD storage area and had to make a spacer that moves the license plate down a bit to clear the camera. I snaked a wire up to the back of the left taillight housing to tie into the back up light. This is a wireless system so I didn't have to run wires through the car.

Previous owner of my car installed a double DIN Kenwood GPS/CD/DVD/Bluetooth head unit with a backup camera. He routed the wiring up into the driver brake light pocket as well.

There is a space between the radio and the CD storage area that I made a bracket (angle aluminum) to slip into and added some pieces to hold the Garmin unit. I think the Drive Assist screen is similar in size (7" screen),
I drilled a 5/16" hole in the bumper above the license plate. It helps if you remove the license plate light for access. I then removed the sill plate (4 screws) above the bumper which allows you to pull the bumper forward enough to slip in something to snake the camera wire up to the left taillight assembly which comes out easily with a 10mm socket.
You will need some wire splice connectors to tie into the back up light wires (brown is negative and blue is positive) The transmitter has an adhesive backing that you can press against the back of the housing. The transmitter can send a signal to 40' (I tested that.) so you don't have to place it any closer. The receiver is in the new cable they give you to replace the one you now have that plugs into the lighter port. The camera clips onto the top of the license plate. If you have a clearance problem , you bring the plate down a little bit.

good idea and thanks for sharing.
if/when I decide to do something similar, I will likely look into the Pearl Rear Vision camera (or something similar) since I already use my smartphone as GPS
