Default made the mistake of racing a charger with a 396 lol

ya know my 1999 cerrera seems quick and a blast to drive when its just me. after a while of enjoying the thrill of these awesome cars... you get comfy and a little to confident in its ability lol

driving to church yesterday a charger with the 396 badges rolled up on me. gave me a thumbs up and then just cruised a little behind me for a bit. then he came up window to window again and gave me the smirk and head nod. I reciprocated and shifted into 3rd gear at about 68mph which felt great putting me around 4k rpms and launched it nicely thinking "yes... gonna get this" .... nope lol that guys spanked me like a read headed step child acting up in walmart lol we shot up to about 105 in no time and both let off.

I cruised up to his window, gave him the thumbs up and he gave me the thumbs up back but added a new smirk... looked something like "now make me a samich" lol

it was fun and I always like a little road thrill with good spirited car guys but man I wish these were just a little faster

The test should have included a hairpin turn at the end of the straight. Then we would see who had the "make me a samich" smirk!

I know right !!!! lol this was strictly a straight line down the highway... not fair lol those cars are like 4000lbs and nothing but rockets straight forward. but ... i'll give em the respect he deserved ... his car was fast, when he pulled ahead it was taillights and exhaust... easily.

still fun lol

Carrera's aren't exactly drag queens, as much as they're track queens. Bigger HP boats do well in straight lines, but are less practical as get away vehicles when you need to make calculated turns.

Hockenheim short course
SRT8 Challenger - 1:17.40
996 Carrera - 1:15.90

The fast guy on a track down the straights is the same guy that got through the previous corner quickly. Back in my sprint car days in a trophy dash the guy in second place behind me had a killer motor. I could hear him at the end of the straights but not coming out of the corner. This went on for all 8 laps! I won and on reviewing the film he hadn't figured out how to turn left properly! This was not because I was good I had just figured out how to turn the corner! Later in a feature race I was coming out of turn four and he and his car was laying on it's top in the middle of the track. Don't think he ever figured it out. Good thing his daddy had lots of money!

If only you had been driving a Viggen. Then you would have had him!

Oh come on, man, that wouldn't even have been fair. Nothin' can compete with a Viggen - that's like bringing a gun, nay a bazooka, to a knife fight.

I know this will sound lame and oldmanish, but I've never felt comfortable racing someone else on the street since you have no idea what modifications have been made. For all you know, that Charger could have been a 700 hp mod with the 396 badge left on to keep it less obvious.

Not oldmanish just logical. Beside either one would spank a stock 911. I stand by "add a corner".

most new minivans would give a 996 a hard time in a straight line.

Default Something to consider

Yea there are some King Kongs out there but if you want to be in the running in a straight, Consider this. I have a Crossfire SRT6 and unless it's a Vette 06 or a blacked out dodge with a funny Hawk looking thing on the side, you got a real good chance to smoke em in a street brawl. It's all in the launch .

all good comments guys I just turned 40 and my crazy driving days are somewhat ... somewhat behind me. but its fun every now and then to have a little fun and let loose.

that car sounded mean and it might have been modded which is no biggy. I'm happy with my 996. love my 986 as well which is even slower. last year I sold my vette which was faster than both of them. but the Porsche .. you guys know... its a Porsche thing. they are just smiles to drive.

I do wish they were a little quicker though. its all good

With 475 lb-ft of normally-aspirated torque, a pretty decent 8-speed gearbox, and 0-60 down near 4 seconds, this might not be the best car to compete with in a straight line with a 996.

The weight difference (the Charger is 4,400 pounds...holy hell!) probably helped it seem like less of a slaughter; no matter what kind of stability control trickery is involved, that's a LOT of car when it comes to cornering. I suspect that on a sufficiently windy course, the 996 would at least have a fighting chance.

It strikes me as funny that you street-raced (or stop-light drag raced) another car on your way to church...sounds like a Roadkill episode.

RE: the "old man" comments about street vs. track - being on the way to church might get St. Pete to move you into the heavenly equivalent of the TSA precheck line, but it won't make you less dead (or, in the event of no death, won't prevent you from getting a summons for reckless driving).

Note that I am suggesting that OP is reckless or otherwise distributing dispersions...rather, the "old guy" driving style makes a lot more sense to me (in some circumstances) than it did when I was 16.
