Default Engine oil question

I know Porsche recommend Mobil 1 w0/40.

I am in Malaysia. It's very hot here. Indy said since so hot here it's better to use w10/60.

Is higher viscosity better for the engine in hot weather?

Not for the 993 Turbo.

Use Mobil V-Twin 20W50. Your local Harley Davidson store may have it on the shelf.

Your want a quality 15W50 at least. 20W50 preferred. Brad Penn or Motul would be good, too.

The Porsche 10W60 might be a good selection as well, but not just any 10W60:

And only use Porsche oil filters, no OEM aftermarket Mahle stuff, or others.

Yup mobil v-twin oil. Or mobil 15w-50.

Check these links for the small engine mounted filter.

You can get a 25% off discount from pepboys for the oil. Comes out cheaper than everywhere else I've looked for oil.

Using motul 10w50...
Think they have a "Le Mans" 10w60 as well. May be better.

If you have access to the V-Twin oil get that. Mobil 1 15 w50 is also great to use

Just remember, Mobil 15W50 is NO longer Steve Weiner approved for the aircooled 911s since the reformulation last year.

V-Twin
Motul
Brad Penn
DT50
Porsche Classic

Would all be good.

Interesting. What did they do? Lower ZDDP or increase detergent?

Not sure, Ronnie, but what was being seen was high shear viscosity breakdown over the drain interval as compared to previous UOA samples. In other words, M1 15W50 was falling out of spec faster than M1 V-Twin......much like how 0W40 falls out of spec so soon, and exhibits high shear breakdown.

Clicked on the link and here we have an analysis yielding iron at a multiple of four times norm and this was dismissed! With only 2500 miles on the oil!! Because....the oil was Mobil 1 20-50 M/C oil. If it had been Mobil 1 15-50 would the high iron have been dismissed? I think not.

What about previous oil changes? How long have you had the car. When I bought my car it had really dirty oil and the remnants lasted for the next oil change or two.

Are there any other indications of problems?

I'm no expert but using 15w-50 Mobil shouldn't be a death warrant. I used 15w-50 and had smoke but I think it was an oil filter problem. You should be using a 20w-50 in Malaysia.

ETA - You should be using V-Twin 20w-50 anywhere with these engines.

I would recommend oil weights that are in the Owners Manual.

0W40 ran in this engine sucks the life out of it..

I would also concentrate on the OIL specs like the VI and HTHS...

Compare the oils in LevVan's last post.. You will see a trend..

I have been recommending VTwin for many years!
