Default telephone console removal

Has anyone experience removing the UGLY telephone console that some 993s were optioned with? What is the cost involved with it? Is the ash tray on the lower dashboard hidden behind the console? From an originality standpoint, do you think having it removed will affect the value of the car?

The way these cars are appreciating, I would leave the console in place and only do mods that are reversible.

+1. I'm not even planning on selling and all I've got are Turbo Kraft oil feed lines and billet diverter valves.

From what I vaguely remember being told is that the removal is fully reversible as it is all bolt on & off. Can someone confirm it who's actually done it?

Yep. It's easy. You'll need a new (non-bat phone) center console and it will leave two small screw holes in the lower dash on either side of the ashtray though.

Maybe it's a bit premature to get to obsessive, but collector interest in these cars is amazingly strong given that in the grand scheme of things, they aren't all that old. Personally, I think the mobile phone gives it a fantastic 'period' vibe, and in fact everyone who sits in the car raves about the phone. Given the pace of technology change, it already looks quaintly vintage.
That said, it's your car and you deserve to like what you see, so I'd just agree with others that say make it reversable, and keep all the old parts safe. It may be worth a premium when it's time to sell if the equipment on the car matches the COA.

thank you for all the feedback. The removal was straight forward and other than two tinny holes there is no evidence of the bat-phone existence. I will keep all the phone console parts as they are part of the car when it's time to sell it. The interior looks perfect now, other than a set of a yellow belts maybe ...
