The water cooled motors sit a little farther back when you try and stuff one in an aircooled chassis

Shadow 993,

It is a very expensive venture. I have a 97' 993 C2S and have been planning this and acquiring the parts for some time now. I am trying to go one step further building my own Andial 3.8 twin turbo conversion. I started looking for parts new and used. On used ones, I would send over to Ollie's by Andial in Santa Ana CA. to have them check out and do machine work. It is a project of love and patience. I wanted to make this a bullet proof motor with all the right parts, and I am still not finished. I also made sure that while my motor is being built that I would always have my car until it was my time to put new motor in. That was the only smart thing that I did. You have to really love your car to do this. I told my wife that I would be taking this car to my grave. I still haven't regret it yet. So, enjoy the ride.
List of parts:
1.turbo heat exchangers $2,464.93 (new)
2.turbo heads used $5,000.00 ( valve job, reface, twin plug conversion, new exhaust valves, new guides, valve springs, stem seals, polish intake ports) Ollie's
3.machine work for heads $2,697 + shipping
4.turbo engine block with crank $4,100.00 used + machine work
5.Mahle piston/cylinder B-turbo 993 3.8, carrillo rods, 993 RS Camshaft, from Andial $7,141.63
6.turbo intercooler $2,000.00 used new is $5,000 from Porsche
7.two K24 turbo's from a 97' turbo S
8.Machine work by Ollie's for case halves and crank such as remove old head studs, boat tail main, media tumble case,r&r oil plug in case, clean oil squirters, hot tank, balance engine, rebuild oil pump, magna flux crank, notch oil holes, micro polish crank $1,643.00
9.turbo pressure plate new $402.00
10.Front end pulley ( I forgot how much)

Well now, this is a rather adventuresome project! Who's doing the ecu programming?

WOW! Very nice project, Shadow. Please come over to the 993 Turbo Forum, and talk about your project.

Is that Porsche intercooler (#6) going to be enough? You may need an Andial one or other aftermarket. BIG $$$$.

I am talking to Peter from Andial in regards to ECU and they directed me to FVD because they no longer build and tune cars, as for intercooler. I will probably be sending my stock intercooler and have Andial do their upgrade on it.

I have alot of extra parts like two stock intercooler and sets of header one new and one used just in case. Parts are getting harder and harder to find. I may also go with FVD intercooler as well. We shall see.

fvd certainly would have been my first suggestion, if you really want to try keep the motor Andial-like and since you can't get a Thielert unit any more. I've spoken to them recently about making a couple of changes to mine (driveblock and central locking delete; retune for recent exhaust and clutch mods) and they seem ready enough to do it. If you don't really care about making it Andial-like I'm sure there are others. You're going to need to do something with the IC.

Definitely will be doing something to IC. Not sure which route yet. FVD is probably who I will deal with. Did you Dyno blackie yet?

Noooooooooo. Don't EVER mention that word here. And all I cared about recently was the scale and I'm pretty happy with the results it shows ... for now.

9elevenc2s

The process of researching, chosing the exact configuration of your engine, finding the parts, assembly and tuning is probably as, or more, rewarding than driving it afterwards, so take your time and enjoy the "ride".

Reading diagonally through the list I see you are maybe around $28-30k in parts already. You still need to add an upgraded clutch assembly ($1.5-2k), one or two upgraded fuel pumps ($250-500), injectors (?), mechanical rockers depending on usage ($2k), exhaust system ($2-3k), new timing rails, chains and adjusters, FPR, ECU ($7k Andial/fvd), second oil cooler ($1-1.5k). Then given that you have an almighty 3.8 twin plug you will for be pushed by experts and resellers for upgraded brakes and gearbox which are not really needed (I used stock for 3 years on the track without any issues) and you are in mid-$50k territory excluding labor cost. We haven't moved away from the stock intercooler/Andial yet.

As I said the project itself is more fun than the outcome sometimes, but this build is very expensive for sure and the outcome will be a low-mid 500s HP engine with 10% more torque than a 3.6 single plug ~500hp engine. and much more expensive to maintain with 12 spark plugs and incremental heat that the heads and other components have to deal with.

After having BTDT, I think I would be just as happy with a proven single plug 3.6 500HP engine or a K24 450ps kit engine with a lighter car.

Going back to the original topic of this thread, I believe going for a stock 993TT engine swap is an excellent choice for any N/A user who wants to experience the torque of a TT and does not have resale value as a key priority.

But if money is no object, the 3.8 twin plug is definitely sexy.

ean,

I already have the a new light weight flywheel and upgraded sport clutch assembly from Andial. I forgot about that lost receipt. I also have the Porsche Turbo S auxillary oil cooler. But still alot more to spend.
The journey is what is keeping me going.

  • add a protomotive turbo kit or supercharger to your car
  • have fun driving
  • when the time comes to sell, remove the bits, sell your car and sell the aftermarket bits
