Default Advice on buying 993 TURBO S '97

Hi, looking to buy my dream car, a '97 993 TURBO S , and needed some advice from all the Porsche aficionados.

Was curious to the current market price? Has this car appreciated or depreciated in the last few years? Im planning on buying regardless and keeping forever so I don't mind if its worthless 15 years from now but would feel stupid if the value of the car dropped by more than a third in the next 15 months.

Need advice on how to go about buying '97 993 TURBO S. Do i go to a Porsche dealer, exotic cars dealer, online. Any suggestions on reputable sellers and would be very appreciated.

Found these listing online. Are these asking prices reasonable and are they scams? Can somebody share any experience with CATS EXOTICS, SLOAN and PURCHASING ON EBAY? Is it safe to buy on ebay? Is CATS EXOTICS and SLOAN's REPUTABLE DEALERSHIPs?

CATS EXOTICS is selling one for $169,888.00 on EBAY>

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...ht_6188wt_1167

SLOANS has a 1997 993 Turbo S Arctic Silver/Black 8,801 miles for $185,000.00
http://sloancars.com/566/1973-911s-s...lack-restored/

and 1997 993 Turbo S Black /Black 9,710 miles for $185,000.00

What questions should i be asking these sellers and what should i look for?
How does getting independent appraisals and inspections work. Anybody know where i can source these kinda service? Is it necessary?

Found this 1973 911S Silver/Black restored for $98,000. What do u guys think?

Any advice and feedback would be extremely helpful.

Thanks to all the rennlist members in advance.

Spring for a membership in Rennlist and then do a search on buying a 993 Turbo and Turbo S. After you've spent about two weeks reading those posts you'll be very knowledgeable and ready to buy. Congrats on your wisdom in coming here before you've bought a car!

Sloan and RPM have great reputation here. although usually a litttle pricier than other wise but you know what you get.

Research this and other Porsche forums/data.

Yes a PPI(pre purchase inspection) is highly recommended(too much coin to risk) also be prepared to take a flight, as someone's opinion may not exactly be yours.

What is your Porsche background(knowledge/ownership)?

do you want to drive the car or for show purposes only?

Hopes this helps...

welcome ... give yourself a good 6-9 months before you purchase a car. with the cars that you're looking to buy, they're not moving fast. it's obvious you have an expansive appreciation for porsches (the 73 and 97 are world's apart). take your time and wait till you see the absolute perfect one you want. if an "s" has always been your dream car then certainly search one out and buy one --- but imho it's not worth the premium: an above average "s" will cost you more than 120 and the very nicest ones are well north of 150k as you're finding out. for 1/2 that value you can get pristine tt without the "s" designation.

......wait , what ? you are sending us mixed messages here.

If you are keeping it forever, all your questions should have been about specific cars and their condition & history,
not about depreciation .....or prices ...or dealers...

I would not hesitate to purchase from either Sloan or RPM. They both appear to have pretty good raps here.

I would recommend researching everything you can for a few months and negotiate your price hard. Great time to buy, not to be selling. And make sure you have a very competent air cooled turbo mechanic in your hip pocket. Better than knowing a good doctor.

1. don't buy the first one.

2. buy a paint meter
$250 well spent.

As a recent owner (it was a dream car for me too), here's my advice: find the best example you can, negotiate your best price and don't look back. If you are going to have it for the long term, depreciation (inevitable) and re-sale value really won't matter. As with any car, consider:
1) the complete ownership history (how many owners, what states has it lived in, etc.);
2) the extent and completeness of maintenance history/records;
3) carfax/accident history reports;
4) any paint re-sprays?;
5) any modification/changes since it left the factory?;
etc., etc.

Invest in a PPI, if only for your own peace of mind, but do your own meticulous physical inspection - there are myriad indications of how a car has been used and treated.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

The only thing for the turbo S to maintain its high value is low mileage and being accident free.

If you plan on not using it much, then you're OK.

If you plan on driving and tracking it a lot, then get a GT3RS.

I bought my car from Willhoit Enterprises and couldn't be happier with the car or the service. I would recommend at least talking to him to see if he has any leads. I know of an excellent mechanic for a PPI in Kansas City if you should need one. Best of luck and have fun!
