How do I remedy a suspected oil overfill?
Just took the 993TT out of winter storage today. As I do every year, I added a quart of oil before starting the engine to let things lubricate after sitting all winter. I suspect I over filled it this time because as I recall the level was almost full when I placed the car into storage in the fall. Immediately upon startup lots of white smoke, and barely out of the driveway before the "check engine light" came on and then began flashing. I immediately turned around to head back to my driveway. In the 1000 ft drive back, the engine light stopped flashing and just became solid again. My question is what do I do? Is it safe to run the engine and burn off the oil or does it need to be towed to the dealer? Boy am I aggravated with myself....
As always, your advice is greatly appreciated!!

was the car running when you added the 1 litre? from your description this is may be the problem. 1 litre overfill I don't think is a big deal...however others more knowledgable may chime in on this.

I just undid the main oil tank plug and let about a litre out when I did this recently. It get's a bit messy but as long as the oil's not hot it's OK.
It's not really a biggie if it's just a bit over I don't think.
If there is a next time I will do the Turbo plug though.

Thanks
Hey Thank for all the info guys. When it happened to you did you also get the check engine light? Does it go off if you remove the oil or does it need to be reset at the dealer? I may be stuck going to the dealer anyhow since I have no way of getting under the car. I don't have the right tools or equipment, but at times like this I wish I did...

This is a job that every owner should be able to do.. Or be prepared to do..
Go to Home Depot of Lowes and get some scrap 2 x12's they will cut them for you, ask them to cut a 24 to 30" piece.
Go to the local Napa or nearby "parts store" Sears is also good. What you are looking for is a 8mm *6 point) Allen> I recommend a socket version vs the wrench style.
When home drive the car onto the 2 x 12" You should be able to reach under the engine to move around and get to the sump tanks. Unless you weigh 300lbs.. You might need to purchase 6 x 12" lumber..
When you undo the sump tank plugs you do NOT have to worry about OIL gushing out of the tanks. Any plastic container will work>> you can even grab a wifes pie plate.. Once you undo the plug, you can start the engine, just idle the engine. It will take you about 3 to 4 minutes of idle time to drop a good quart.. Shut the engine off, the oil flow will taper off. Maek sure that you locate the aluminum oring/sealing ring. It could stuck on the sump tank. Install the plug and tighten snuggly.
As I have mentioned many times, use your dipstick to view the engine oil level when the engine is HOT.. Do not use the gauge clusters..

I can't imagine the CEL is related to an oil overfill. You should get that checked out. You should NOT ever go to a dealer for maintenance/service of your 993. Find a good, independent Porsche specialist near you.

I had the CEL light twice in the past. One it was a loose I/C hose and the other was a loose battery terminal. Strange but true! The wiring systems in these cars are not as sophitacted as a car trailer these days!
Point is ALWAYS check the silly things first.
