When you guys switch back and forth between oils, be aware that additives will stay on components through 2-3 changes (ie if you use brand A, then change to brand B, the additives in brand A will likely be working until you change the oil with brand B 2-3 changes before you see for real what brand B is doing). Switching back and forth with one change doesn't mean much. You may only see a change after one oil change if brand B is the better oil...
The only way to make sure what oil is doing what is to tear you engine down and wash everything with solvent (and use the oil you're interested in as assembly oil) between oil brand changes.

Not much different, but $12 per liter.
How long are you planning on running it? I've heard about 4k miles max on this stuff.
Edit: It seems the link above is for the 4t, which is recommended for motorcycle use only. The 300v competition is the one you want for cars it seems.

now I'm on the fence.
I can get VTwin for $10/qt at the local autozone. The motul is available on the ebay at $12.50/liter.
Vtwin has more ZDDP, but that also risks the cats, it also may be a bit thick for winter.
Motul seems to be the most shear stable, but isn't really good for longer drain intervals.
Any thoughts on which is better (knowing both are more than good enough).
thanks.

Motul 300V should not be used as a extended oil. It is a race oil with little detergent. 3000to 3500 mile oil changes are in order.
Forget about your cat damage. The zinc levels that have been used prior when these cars were new didn't knock out the cats. The crappy low octane fuel does more damage to the cat than the zinc deposits.
For most daily drivers I would strongly recommend the VTwin.

I spent hours and hours on the forum's search feature investigating oils for our cars. There are a lot... a whole lot, of opinions. Motul seemed to be a good choice. I had put Mobil One 0-w40 in the turbo when I bought it. Obviously a poor choice for our cars. Motul has everything we need and right weight. I figure I'll doing it myself yearly (1500 miles or so) for under $200. Not too bad.

you're absolutely right chuck. I could probably alternate between vtwin and Motul and be totally fine.
have you noticed anything with the Motul...quieter, smoother, oil temps, etc?

The last time I read about oils on this forum the following was touted as a good one. I never used it:

I agree. I'll post the zinc values from my oil analysis, later today, for the first 2 changes with Mobil 1 Ext. Perf. 15W50 VS the Twin V. They are actually very similiar. The Twin V was slightly lower.

Not on the engine oli. It has less than 2,000 miles on it. I wasn't going to do the transmission oil. I am only doing it so I have a base line. I did the brake fluid and it was very dirty.

Here are the Zinc (zinc dithiophosphate) values from my 3 used oil analysis (Blackstone Labs):
Approx. 5,000 miles Mobil 1 15W50 Ext. Perf. (gold cap) 1,159 ppm
(33,900 miles total miles)
5,100 miles Mobil 1 15W50 (gold) 1,387 ppm
(39,250 miles)
5,317 miles Mobil 1 Twin V 20W50 1,147 ppm
(44,563 miles)
For example, the Red Line 5W40 that I run in my Boxster S has Zinc levels in the used oil analysis of about 1,258 ppm (3 sample average on approx. 22,000 miles).
The MSDS Sheet from Mobil states a Zinc level in the virgin oil of <2.5%:
http://www.msds.exxonmobil.com/psims...mentFormat=RTF
So, it looks like the Twin V has a lower zinc level than the M1 Ext. Perf. (gold cap) 15W50.......but this oil is also discontinued my Mobil 1. Now they just have the normal M1 15W50 stuff.
