Pricing Question
I am giving some serious thought to making the quantum leap forward to a 993TT. I have been following the forum here for a few months and have communicated with a few dealers. I am interested to know the following:
1.) How many $ should it cost for a 1997 20-25k mile Black/Black all original, no accident, no paint or body work, no stories, one or two owner vehicle at this time?
2.) Should there be any difference in price between a 1996 and a 1997 all things be equal?
3.) Should it be considered mandatory to do a leakdown test as part of the PPI with a car having this mileage?

1. That sounds like a $70-$80k vehicle in the US. So many fewer 97s were made that finding one in black on black is gonna be tough.
2. I'd say you're gonna save maybe $5k on a 96.

Thanks, Quadcammer. I was figuring $70-72 USD and approx. $80 with around 15k miles. I didn't realize that so many fewer 97 had been made. I will make sure to get a leakdown test performed.

After a 3 year search Glenn I don't think you'll find a perfect low mileage - under 15k miles - no story car for under $85k in the US or under $95k in Canada. Knock only $10k off for another 10k miles, add $5k to $8k for 5k to $10k fewer miles. Most seem to have a bit of paint somwhere but make sure it hasn't been hit. The '97 usually commands a $4k premium. Courtney did my PPI and based on computer info said I'd be wasting my money doing a leakdown but my car only had 8,300 miles. I think he said he'd automatically do a leak down on anything over 15k miles. Call me if ya wanna chat.

That's a bit risky - no way to tell that a low mileage car didn't miss a shift or overrev a bit and kiss a valve. My old car had a full top- and bottom-end rebuild at 24k miles.

Sloan (I don't know much about them but I recall that they get pretty good reviews on this site) currently have a '97 Red/Black 15k car for $86K IIRC and a '96 White/Gray 24k car for $76k. Both look like nice cars and seem to be priced right assuming there is a little room for negotiating.

I found when I was looking at the end of last year I gave up looking at mileage because it seems most 993TT's have unfortunetely been clocked. I think all owners will know that a 993TT after 50,000miles should still feel as tight as new if the car is not taken on track days too regularly. If you look at the non turbo 993 cars that are less likely to be clocked a car with 100,000miles on it doesn't feel like anything else with 100,000miles on it. These cars were REALLY built to last and it's an insult to Porsche's handy work that cars are needing full engine rebuilds at "25,000miles" its just not true!
Gets me really angry just because of the money they are still worth they attract all the wrong kinds of dealers. That's why I'd never buy from a dealer now. When I look again I'll be asking around at shows and on forums for privately owned cars with 1 or 2 owners who have known the car from new and know its not messed with.

Apparently you can tell from the fault codes if a leak down is required. I participated in my PPI . They show the variance between cylinders and if it is really small, there's no need. Have you ever heard of a car that has not shown issues via fault codes and sufferred a mechanical failure? I'm no mechanic but am skeptical that it's a revenue generating activity that provides little additional info, particularly on ultra low mileage cars. The computer also shows the operating time so it is pretty easy to tell if the odo has been tampered with. I trust Courtney's judgement on this because of his rep and it's omly one part of his total PPI. Having said that, they are expensive cars . I also found you can negotiate a bit on higher mileage cars but there is little flexibility on low mileage cars, particularly in Canada.............
