Hi,

just wanted to report : I had a high pitched whine in 6th at speeds between 100 and 120 mph, enough to have me look at the price of a rebuild. Well I just tried the realignment trick and I hope it's not just my imagination but the whine has almost gone. If I didn't know it was there before I would now never notice it. Hope it stays that way.

Thanks !!!

Fabulous!

So to be clear, what did you do? which bolts? in what order?

cheers Taj.

Well I can tell you what I did but I don't know if that's the way LAT would recommend. I have a lift with a wooden construction that allows me to get under the car with the wheels on the ground. In that position I loosened (after the front and tranny undertrays were gone) first the 19 mm bolt of the differential mount and then the 17 mm bolt of the front tranny mount.(holding the 17 nut with a 2nd wrench) just enough to be sure the bushings were free. I then raised the car and put it back on the wheels again in order to let the transmission assembly settle. Finally I tightened the 17 mm and the 19 mm bolts and went for a drive. As you can notice I did not loosen the 6 bolts of the transmission crossmember!
That made the trick for me but I'm not sure if it's the correct way to do, perhaps LAT can comment.

Well done, the only difference was that we used a hydraulic lift. After loosening the bolts we lowered the car to rest on the wheels and then lifted and retorqued the bolts.

Might I suggest muffler bypass pipes to "fix" the gear whine??
