Default New owner of a 993TT looking for advice...

I am going to be taking delivery of my first air cooled Porsche next week, a 1996 Black/tan 993TT with 41k, bone stock. I can't wait.

I have had 3 new Porsche's in the past; 996 coupe, 997 CS Cab and a 997 C4S Cab, but have always wanted to own something "special" which brought me back to the days when I first fell in love with the brand. My father-in-law's '86 Targa really got my juices flowing.

Having always owned new cars under warranty I have never been concerned about potential issues. Can anyone offer advice to a first time owner of a 12 year old air cooled TT Porsche with regards to maintainance, trouble shooting or expected common issues?

TRUANTlkn, congrats on the future new car! Where did you buy it?

I recommend putting $10K in an interest bearing account, ear-marked only for 993 TT Maintenance. Then, you have no worries.

i disagree with the 10k thing. As long as the car is in good shape, service records, good ppi and has been used in a responsible manner, there should be no issues other than a suspension upgrade, I have 70k on mine and no problems, i am the 2nd owner, meticulously serviced etc. bought the care with alittle over 55k miles. The 10k will come in handy if you wish to do upgrades that is, but i don't think necessary for repairs, i have spent a ton on upgrades, from wheels and tires, to body kit to sound system, to tuning kits, to aluminum bits for interior including steering wheel shifter and e brake the only things i have HAD to replace are clutch accumulator, and steering rack, thats it.

I bought the car from Victory Motorcars in Houston. As for a ppi, I went on their word that they had done an inspection. I figured with their ad in Christopherous magazine and being specialists in air cooled cars I could trust them. They have over 60 in stock. I was thinking I was going to keep it stock, but it sounds a little like the Harley Davidson syndrome, once you own one you want to personalize it. Truth be told, I'll probably be bored with the 400hp in a matter of weeks and I think the money will start flowing after that.

My in-laws run GMP Performance in Charlotte. They have connections for that sort of stuff. www.gmpperformance.com. Do you recommend any specific upgrades (power) to start?

I agree with Sebastian's post as far as internals on our tt's. If its well maintained they are hearty motors. However, having said that there are items that will necessitate replacement from wear and they are NOT cheap. Some of these items:

1. Clutch
2. Lower valve gaskets are known for leaking on higher mileage cars(turbos need to come off to get to these).
3. Turbos--especially if there are no check valves or Mahle filter issues.
4. Many say that the valves and guides on these motors are short lived.

All but #4 are my personal experience and it cost just around 10K, so the above post is a pretty good suggestion.

You should have come on here first and done a search on Victory Motors. Hopefully, you got a good one.

Good luck with it!

good points although a clutch replacement is mostly the fault of the driver imo some may disagree but if i recall someone is on here with over 200k miles with original clutch, and we replaced the lower valve covers when we did the turbo upgrade to kevin's stage 2 as one of those while you are in there things, car already had check valves and always used porsche oil filters,

Hi,

Hopefully, you had a thorough Pre-Purchase Inspection done so you know the condition of the car and what it needs. These cars do need good maintenance (beyond factory recommendations which are minimal) for best longevity and durability.

Generally speaking:
Keep that oil changed every 3K, using a good product and be sure to do your research on that subject as many things have changed. Pull the engine undertray if its still on there, flush the brakes and clutch hydraulics, if the shocks are original, they are overdue for replacement as the stock German Monroes are usually shot by 35K.

Beyond that, go drive it and have a good time,....

Cesar,

Is there something about Vicotry Motors that I should be concerned about? I am brand new to any type of forum, let alone this one, how would I do a search on them?

TRUANTlkn, go up to the "search" button in the toolbar and type in "Victory Motors". There are several threads there about them. Does not sound too good.

famous last words.
if the car is still there do a PPI in houston, if it is on its way speak to dealer tell them you are going to do a ppi when it arrives and to be sure of condition.
