Default Am I crazy?

I have owned my 96 black on black turbo for about 5 years now. I have added a bunch of mods to "make it my own". I have had a lot of fun over the years with the guys at Viper Bob's garage and enjoying the beautiful twisties here on the Bay Area coast.

I bought the car with 25k miles and have just flipped 37k.

During the past couple of years I have been using the car less and less, although my last kid will get her permit this summer so my driving duties will be complete and I will have more opportunity to drive my car to work when I care to, rather then taking them to school in the 530i.

I have experienced the angst that some of you have encountered regarding whether to move on to something more modern (GT3) or keep the faith with the last of the air-cooled classics.

Lately, I have been feeling more like a museum curator and have not been able to enjoy "abusing" my toy for fear that something will break or wear out or whatever. I am afraid to take the car anywhere because I would have to park in public and someone might touch it or give me a door ding.

I have enough stress in my life and don't need more with my "toy", so my mind started wandering and thinking it would be nice to have something that I wouldn't worry so much about. (Probably won't matter, because I am the worrying type!).

What would be fun and less stressful??? Something newer and under warranty and that I could be less **** about???

My mental files ended up at ...Z06. There, I said it, an American POS!

My former personal trainer is even more **** than I am and his tastes run domestic (Hummer HS SUT, a collection of H-D's and a pristine 4k mile black/black Z06).

I had always joked with him that I would buy the car when he grew tired of it AND NOW HE HAS.

My wife is giving me **** for even thinking about this. She has a bad visual of me in a 'Vette. She thinks this is a come down from my string of 3 Porsches.

I just want to have fun with the thing and not have to worry so much.

Looking at pricing, it looks pretty much straight up, but of course the Vette will continue to drop like a rock while the TT has stayed steady for the whole time I have owned it.

So the question is, AM I CRAZY!

Thanks for the free therapy session!

Hal
If you have the means, it's always nice to try something different. Z06 is an unbelievable car for the money. That said, the 993 turbo is one of kind and a nice one is getting harder and harder to find.

I've known several people that did this and were sorry. Drive your tt and deal with maintenance as it comes along. The mods you've made have already "spoiled it" for the **** guys that pay the money you are expecting.

To be direct and answer your question - yes, you are crazy. Keep the 993tt. It is timeless and yours still has low mileage. If properly maintained, I wouldn't expect it to give you grief for a long time to come. Don't know this for sure, but I bet it will hold its value better too. Just my thoughts.

Yes.
Quit worrying. Drive the snot out of your TT. If something breaks, JUST UPGRADE IT!

I owned a 2000 C-5. GREAT performance for the money. In the end though, it's hard to have a relationship with one. I'ts just a Chevy. It really didn't feel that different than the Grand Am we had at the time. Faster and things, yea. But the FEEL of the car (door handles, stereo etc.) was the same.

^^ md11plt says it best. Driving a Porsche at any speed is an experience. Driving a Vette will only be fun on the track or when going fast enough to get thrown in jail.

Hal,

I share similar angst with my Ruf BTR. My solution: add a cheapo base Cayman as my DD. To me, the Cayman is but a Miata on steroids (the folks over at Caymanclub.net is having collective cardiac arrest just about now). I park it anywhere, never wash it, and pile on miles like there's no tomorrow.

In another words, it's a Porsche surrogate for what I will not do to me Ruf. So if you are thinking along my line, ADD a Z06, and keep the 993tt. That's a great combo.

GL with your decisions.

You may be crazy but at least your wife is sane.

Seriously, you have several options:

a) Work on your perspective: It's a car and you're not taking it with you so drive and enjoy it.

b) Replace your 530 with a more fun DD like an RS4.

c) Replace your TT with a 997GT3.

Replacing the TT with a Chevy in not an option.

Buy the Vette, drive it for a while so that you appreciate how amazing the TT is and then sell the Vette!

How much tt repair/upgrade/maintenance can you do for the price of a dd purchase/license/insurance/maintenance?
