Default How is a 97 ECU "chipped"?

Curious to understand how a 97 and onward 993tt ECU is chipped or reprogrammed. Is a new chip soldered in? Is there an EPROM that's reprogrammed?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Felix,

Generally speaking, the chip is unsoldered from the CB, reflashed, and then resoldered back into position.

Nope, other way. It used to be that you could only chip a 97 or 98. Now 96s can be chipped, but with more difficulty and only by certain tuners.

my understanding: 97 and 98 the chips can be removed and replaced or reflashed. 96 can be flashed and chip doesn't need to be removed. You can remove the ecu and ship that to be flashed. Kevin I believe can do this and others have had great things to say about his work.

So by chipped you mean that a std ECU (97-98) can be chipped to either 430, 450 or whatever you prefer? If you have a 97 and chose to simply replace the chip in the ECU, from where do you source the replacement chip? I guess it is not available as a factory part.. TIA

Viggo,

Yessir, one can reflash your existing chip inside your ECU to whatever you want.

The chips are not available separately so we normally unsolder the existing one, reflash it, and resolder it down.

Thanks Steve but you're also implying this can be done without removing the chip?

Nossir, the software can only be changed by removing and resoldering the chip.

I am not aware of anyone who can re-program these cars through the serial port like the water-cooled versions.

K thanks Steve! Having just bought a NA pcar, I'm not into TT territory just yet . But the 993TT is my dream can so I like to find out as much as possible about it..

So basically from a standard setup (408bhp): An additional tubro-s oil cooler, a pair of k24 turbos and a ECU remap could get you anywhere between 450 and 490 bhp depending on bar pressure?

Just reflashing the ECU to 450bhp will produce more lag than the standard config (408bhp that is with the old turbos). Thus, ideally, I'd have to take the car (with the new turbos) to someone knowledgable who has the equipment to reflash the ECU and tweak the car to produce less lag and more linear power? Simply fitting new turbos and sending the ECU back and forth across the atlantic won't solve the lag problem?

Appreciate your input. Newbie here..

I asked because I have a 97 ECU that's been chipped and there's no sign that the chip has been removed and resoldered. And it's not easy working on SMT chips without the right equipment yet shops talk of casually rechipping 993tt ECUs (as per Graeme36S' GT2 Dyno thread )

99% of all folks that offer tuning de-solder the chip and re-solder it back on..

I am almost finished with my OBD2 flash system that will allow anyone to flash programs thru the OBD2 port while leaving the ECU under the seat.

Disclaimer, as with every new product, bugs and software revisions run hand in hand with Murphy's law.

This should be good I had a Ford F250 Powerstroke with a Diablo tuner that you simply plugged into the port and chose one of three power tunes. This would be great if our tt got to this point of ease for programming the ecu.
