How is a 97 ECU "chipped"?

99% of all folks that offer tuning de-solder the chip and re-solder it back on..
I am almost finished with my OBD2 flash system that will allow anyone to flash programs thru the OBD2 port while leaving the ECU under the seat.
Disclaimer, as with every new product, bugs and software revisions run hand in hand with Murphy's law.

I think it's supposed to work with both 97 and 96 ecu's; these ecu's unfortunately through the obd2 port I guess is very very slow and this is one of the problems.

I'm no expert on the Motronic systems, but from what little knowledge I have gained I know that the early 993tt Motronic has one chip for both the operating code/program and the data, whereas the later ecu has two separate chips, one for each function. You can chip the early ecu but you will need to remove the existing dual function chip and replace it with a circuit board that splits the signals into two discreet chips as on the later ecu, then you can treat it the same as a 97 version.
The common way to map the 97 version is to unsolder the chip and fit a chip socket. You can then use an emulator in the conventional way to access the maps as required, when finished the original chip can be reflashed and fitted to the socket, thus allowing easier upgrades in the future.
The downside to all this is that these programmable chips are no longer made, so you need a Motronic anorak on your case who can get one from the Bosch ecu of another car that's less expensive than the 993TT ecu. There is only one guy in the UK who I know can do all this and is who I got this information from....

Colin ,
Have you contacted Ray Northway , 01189714333 for 993TT OBD style mapping on either early 87M12 or later CC640 DMEs?
All the best ,
Geoff
