Hey Guys,

I am thinking very seriously about rebuilding my 993tt and punching it out to 3.8 liter and maybe twin plug. My question is: should I use Ruf or a very qualified local builder? Resale value?

Local builder is less money, but is a Ruf title that important?

I think Ruf would command better resale value with a national audience, the other builder equal with a local, knowledgeable person.

Will Ruf build a twin-plug 3.8 liter? They will build you a nice Turbo R engine because they've proven the durability and driveability. My guess is they won't do it.

That's also a likely proposition. Is there a factory Porsche Motorsports 3.8 kit for the TT?

I just finished up a 3.8 TT motor twin plugged, GT2871s.....Very nice build. if you have specific questions about this type of build please ask. They are not just for the local engine builder and the choice you make should be a very well researched one. Since I build a lot of motors I am not a huge believer that RUF is the Holy Grail, not in this day and time. They carry the name, but in the end a well built motor with the right stuff is always going to sell.

I was advised some years ago that they (RUF) prefer a 3.6 for cooling reasons.

Yes, Mahle makes the Motorsport barrels and pistons but it requires the case spigots to be machined.

Actually there are both slip and machined. I prefer the machined as it gives more meat to the cylinder. You do however have to machine the spigots to accept a pair of o-rings. I will see if I can find pictures to post.

Of course the name Ruf being associated with a 3.8 engine is going to help with resale but your going to pay more out of pocket upfront, even if they will build it for you

Find a builder who has done many before and that you feel comfortable with, maybe you can contact some prior customers to see how satisfied they are. This shouldn't be a problem since I'm assuming this costs around $30k + from a really good shop. I've heard the Ruf stuff is closer to $50k!!! Just heard though, no first hand experience from my end

What about Andial? Are they still building twin plugs?

Andial is no longer running the service side at all. Twin plugging the 3.8 is not that big of a deal. You can go several routes but the easiest is to simply run a series of coil pacs and a expander.

Ah yes. Just adding to the line up. I guess for the right price I would it has everything and the kitchen sink in it. Just means I would have to start over.

Was that the 200K car for 18K?? If so I was floored how nice that car was for the mileage. We did 3 PPIS that day and that was honestly the nicest car and had double the mileage.

I would suggest for you to find someone who has the experience , qualified and close to you as well. This way you wont have problems in any service. It would be a pain to transport cars often. I have a Protomotive 3.8tt twin plug being rebuilt by Rob King @SCARGO.
