Default Cool Down Question

I've read on this forum that it's recommended to let your TT idle for a cool down period of 3-5 minutes after spirited driving. Given that these cars are air cooled, isn't it better to just take it easy and not go over say 3000 rpm for the last 5 minutes of your drive to allow it to "air cool"? The car seems to get hotter at idle and it even states in the manual not to let the car sit at idle for too long. Your input is appreciated.

You're cooling down the Turbos, far more warmer then the engine itself. In my opinion (some will disagree) if you drive the car fairly light the last 5-10 minutes will reduce the cooldown period and you can let it idle for 60s. But I think Kevin here is the real expert and I'd check with him for advice.

mikey as long as your exhaust gasses aren't flaming on the way out like magnus/rassel's icon photo...you should be okay with a 60 second or one minute idle cool down- whichever comes first.

It's to cool the turbos and to ensure the turbines are spinning as slowly as possible when the engine (and therefore the turbos' supply of cooling and lubricating oil) is shut off.

It's unburnt fuel. Normal cats and muffler will take it away. If you want a 3 foot flame like Pete, rich mixture is a way to get it...

It usually comes when you let go off the gas, shifting gears for example.

it looks awesome! So after my car passes state inspection I switch to a race exhaust, do the race gas setup for the track...and flame on?

Well, I'm not completely sure about what setup you have and to be honest, shooting flames is far from my expertise. I have no idea how that rear bumper likes it either. But I guess it would work?!
