Default Is the RUF Turbo R Conversion worth the Money?

I have been quoted $28,000 for the Turbo R Conversion Kit, including Labor. Gotta spend another 3K for trucking. For those Turbo R owners out there; are you happy with the kit? any major concerns with the it?

Was this quote from Ruf, Dallas? Does it include a top-end job, or assumes you don't need one or have already had one? What's the milage on your car?

Yes, that was the quote from Ruf at Dallas, and I will have to truck my car there in order to have the conversion kit install, by their techs. My TT has 26,000 miles

I have a long answer to your short question. The Ruf turbo R engine upgrade is great... very fast and drivable, with no issues. They know what they are doing. It is, however, very pricey. My engine conversion wa done by the previous owner, and with a higher mileage car (86k at the time), to get the warranty, the engine case was split and all new parts were used, including oil pump, chains and 6 new cylinder heads! The previous owner also went for the Ruf wheels and the Ruf suspension, oil cooler, strut brace and the Ruf pedals and floor mats. Needless to say, his conversion was way more expensive.

I would have to say that the Ruf suspension is an absolute marvel... and I had PSS-9s on my previous TT.

There is a very slippery slope involved with the Ruf Turbo R conversion... if you look through their catalog, you may also be tempted for the Ruf bumpers, the Ruf brakes, Ruf wheels, Ruf aero mirrors, Ruf seats, steering wheel, shifter, etc.... You coulde even have the rain gutters shaved, and install the integral Ruf roll cage!

My car has a lot of the Ruf bits on it, and I love it. It is quite unique in both appearance and performance.

I get my car serviced at RUF here in dallas, and actually spend a lot of time down there talking to hans and wayne- their facility is top notch. it seems that when you consider the RUF price, a lot of that will probably come back to you in the form of resale should you decide to go that route down the road, especially in comparison to other 'tuner' 993's. Are you just doing the engine, or the brakes and transmission/suspension as well?

I've seen, heard, touched, ridden and/or driven all the RUF products from the r kompressor, r turbo, ctr2, rt12, rgt and they are all very streetable, the ctr2 is probably the least around town friendly due to its super wide body.

let me know when you decide to send it- I would love to watch them do it

I think it's engine only - cams, turbos and ECU and perhaps mufflers. While it's undoubtedly got a proven pedigree and cachet I think there are more cost effective options. UMW's (Kevin) Stage 2 should be fairly close and is about a third the price - uninstalled.

I'm not sure about the mufflers... my car came with the previously-installed Roock mufflers (now has bypasses). But it does have the Ruf sport cats. I would not be too surprised to hear that the Ruf cooler comes with the Turbo R kit, but I don't know for sure. I agree... you can get much better performance bargains out there, but the Ruf kit is SO proven, and so pleasant, and may return some of its cost at resale time, that it may be worth it. It may especially be worth considering if you get interested in installing some of the other Ruf bits... even down the road, and making a unique Ruf statement with the car.

For the same money, I had similar work done including : Cams, turbos, oil cooler, exhaust, muffler, clutch, flywheel, pressure regulator and ECU remapped.

Very, very pleased with the performance level increase.

Only need to have front end suspension improved as on ever increasing pulling power at top end gets a bit light.

Suggest...you sell your car and wait for Ruf to get something "interesting" in and buy it. You'll save some $$ and time.

Maybe something interesting...like... this

the real question (courtesy of steve)

'Isn't 400hp enough? You guys with your 500hp stuff, that's just idiotic...' haha.
