Doug: Are you suggesting that M1 5w-50 is better than M1 15w-50?

FYI, M1 5w-50 is sold in Canada whereas M1 15w-50 is not.

Hi Louis,
M1 5w-50 is indeed a better lubricant in a Porsche engine

The main reasons relate to their respective Pour Points, Flash Points and Viscosity Index - and etc.

In beween a typical cold start point and normal "core" operating temperature the 5w-50 will always flow better and come off lubrication system/filtration by-pass sooner

Regards

Basal rumor has it that Canadian Tire has Mobil 1 5W50 in stock??

http://www.mobil.com/Australia-Engli...bil1_5W-50.asp

It is Porsche and VAG and Chrysler rated. We can't get our hand on this in the states. I might be making a trip across the border soon..

yep, Kevin I just checked my self kept work log, I used Mobil 1 5W-50 the last couple of times. I was going to try the Castrol syntec 5W 50 next time. If I remember correctly, Castrol use hydrocracked synthetic oil as a base oil - which I belive is from petroCan (I may be wrong), which I understand is good quality and to support Alberta) - the 5W40 is Porsche approved so 5W50 should be okay, or may be I'll stick with the mobil 1 - haven't decided. I believe the multigrade oils that have a large viscosity number span are prone to not maintaining viscosity as long so need to change oil a little more frequently.

I'd be happy to go to a few stores and stock up/buy some Mobil 1 5W50 for you to pick up if you like - let me know, or I might even be able to bring some down - I have some time off from work this month!

Ryojo, that is the oil that I am going to use for 996TT fills.. It is Porsche approved. We can't get it in the US because of the Zinc and Phosporus used as a additive. This would be a good fill for the winter months.. However, in the summer I'd bump the oil up to a 15W or 20W...

Does Canadian tire have it in the 5 liter jugs? How is it packaged?? I need 60 qrts..

Kevin I'll have to check when I get home (I'm at the office) but I think it's 4.5L or 1L plastic containers.
I could start hoarding some for you if you like, let me know.

Doug: thanks for the info. I was under the impression that 5w was too light and 15w was preferred. To that end, I've actually done the exact oposite of what Kevin is planning to do.

Kevin: yes, Canadian Tire sells 5w-50 both in quart and gallon containers. There are plenty of stores around the Lower Mainland and it's always stocked.

Basal: on the RL spirit!

Kevin, I think they are 38.99 CAD for 4.4L jug. I've seen them for a couple dollars less and couple dollars more depending on if they are on sale etc. , 8.99 for 1L container.

Thanks for giving me a laugh on a Monday morning. I did the same thing with really fun results. The oil change took me 30 minutes, the cleanup... over an hour.

I actually cut a bigger hole in my drainpain near the handle so that it would drain faster to the interior and wouldn't overflow. If it is carried carefully, it won't slosh out... or just stick a rag in it.

I didn't realize how good things are here interms of oil prices/grades! Now, if I can only find a place in Vancouver that carries Castrol SRF brake fluid - I end up having to pick up my brake fluid in Washington!
