Default Mobil 1 Question

If my car currently has Mobil 1 15-50 will it be okay to add a little Mobil1 15-50 extended performance. I can't find the normal 15-50. Only the 15-50 extended performance. I just want to make sure it would be okay to mix the two. Thanks.

Yes, it is Ok mixing them. However, my most recent oil analysis from a racing application came back and the Extended Performance oil sample is listed as abnormal as I suspected it would be. I won't use Extended Performance in any air cooled 911.

I'll be returning the quart I bought to buy the normal Mobil 1.

No, I wouldn't be worried, I'd just not use it in the future.

HI Geoffrey, I was just wondering as to why you would not use this oil and if you have a personal prefrence for another brand. Thank you, Shane..

Hi Geoffrey...so, then I take it you have done oil analysis from other racing events and similarly submitted samples and were not abnormal? It sounds like in your experience you see less engine wear with regular mobile 1 synthetic??

I really don't know what to think about the oils right now. If you run Mobil 1, you want to run the "New/Old" formula, not the extended performance oil based on the oil analysis samples I have recently. That is all I'm saying. I have been experimenting with other oils which come back better than the Mobil 1. However, I also haven't seen any abnormal wear on the engine with any of the oils. My street C2 has 110 miles on it and was serviced using Shell non synthetic from the dealer every 5k. It showed no wear on the cams, however, it was in storage since 2001 when the previous owner purchased a new C2. Other 964 and 993 engines I've seen recently have had pitting on the cam. Again, I don't know what the real world issues are.

I just switched from mobil 1 to Redline... The reason for my switch is, I read something not too long ago, that stated Mobil reduced the zinc levels in their oils to help reduce clogs from forming in catylitic converters. This reduction is potentially bad for air cooled cars. If you have Mobil 1 in the car, and you are worried, then add a bottle of GM's Eos break in formula.

Just read this on the Mobile1 site:

"Mobil 1 15W-50 is being reintroduced based on popular demand. Mobil 1 15W-50 provides higher viscosity, designed to provide extra protection for performance vehicles and vehicles that operate in severe service, such as towing, hauling and racing. Additionally, Mobil 1 15W-50 contains higher levels of anti-wear (ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate) that may be required for certain racing applications and camshaft designs. This is a new Mobil 1 15W-50 formulation and is not the same as the product that was marketed a few years ago."

For quite a while, all I could find was the extended life stuff. I just found the reintroduced 15W-50 at Costco for $30/6pack.

Same here. I looked everywhere locally until I remembered Costco might have some. Just like you I found the 15W-50 for $30/6 pack.
