Default 997 headlight conversion?

How hard might it be to fit better shaped (aerodynamically) 997 model headlights for 993 ?
I like to lower car's Cd value..
(Cd value has been lowered from 993 model's 0.34 to 0.30 in 996 model and later even 0.28 for 997 model)

I think that this topic area is in quite low importance compared what it means..
so when you have enough power and your car is enough lightweight this Cd issue pops up next

I know that MAShaw is doing 997 GT3 front bumper conversion for 993TT but I think, it still uses stock shaped headlights..

I wouldn't expect lights alone to make much difference. Most of the improvement comes from things like flush mounted glass, no rain gutters, smoothing underbody airflow and rear spoiler design to reduce the turbulence coming off the back of the car.

The inserts for the windscreen pillars should help reduce the Cd; I think Ruf and FVD sell them.

Another factor is also the slope of the windscreen on pre 996s.

Good point - RS Tuning made a 993-based car with a more sloping windscreen and it helped a fair bit. For a performance summary see http://www.einszweidrei.de/porsche/rst993t1997-1.htm

Thanks for advice.
Also aero mirrors do some improvements. I have ordered them and also those windscreen pillar spoilers from RUF.

But how about 997 headlights conversion? Am I only (grazy) who dreams about that

I have asked that kit also from MAShaw - so lets see what they'll say..

Few example about that Cd thing:
With 993TT, it is very hard to compete against 996TT and 997TT at vMax days because when 996TT goes 300km/h it is same air drag effect like 993TT goes 282km/h and when 997TT goes 300km/h it corresponds 993TT's 272km/h speed

Lower Cd would also save little more your gearbox/transmission parts because that makes less load for car.. and also saves fuels because car accelerates better

Juha

Good job! Can you post pictures that are a bit more far away from the car? This looks much better than the white 964 Bello car If I am not wrong?

BTW the real improvement in aerodynamic drag among many other things are the wheel covers, ala what Cartronic and Sportec (SPR1) used for their high speed record braking (attempt) cars. I have read somewhere that it reduces overall drag by 5%which does nt surprise me at all.

Juha,

You have:
  • too much time to dream up crazy ideas
  • too long winters allowing you to turn the dreams into reality
  • too ready access to the right tools such as a welder

Keep us posted and send more pics when you can; I admire your commitment to improving our "relics".

Jean: I'll post better pictures after i have welded pieces together.
Phelix: yes, you are right, we have veeery loong winters here
lowflying: I'll remove sunroof but I still consider if I'll do only sunroof area or maybe bigger area replace with carbon roof - not a whole roof but center area measured about 5-10cm from edges..
Also rain cutters will leave, headlight washers already left, also additional brakelight will go.. maybe roofline can be little lower then..

I am just thrilled that http://www.einszweidrei.de/ is up again.

Go my Finnish friend go, I live in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada and we brag of having the largest FInnish community outside of Finland.

I was just going to say -- while the death-wheel is out of the toolbox, lower that damn roof!! Install NB rear quarter panels.

Take the mirrors off -- install cameras and displays inside the car to replace the mirrors. Smoothe (UK speak?) the trunk lid like the 996 and 997 -- someone makes a cf hood with this feature built in. Reduce cooling inlets on the front bumper to mimimal aperture sizing -- just enough to keep it cool. Tape-off with heli tape all bodywork junctions, gaps etc. Snip-of the rubber drains under the trunk.

Dare I say put your engine cover back on?

Doing the aero math then when a 997TT is doing 300 kph, the 996TT will be doing 289 kph and the 993TT will be doing 272 kph.

All we need is more power
