Default Minimum Miles To Go

New contest, perhaps not the most intelligent. Yesterday, on my way home from the track, I ran my car down on fuel until it read 7 miles to empty. When I filled it, it took 18.32 gallons(capacity is 19.5 by the manual). Anybody push their's farther than that?

Don,

How do you sit down when your nuts are the size of canteloupes? Dang... I would hate to run my car out of fuel. Oh, and btw, I had no idea our cars would hold that much fuel... or do you have the extra large euro tank option?

Just a word of warning particularly those with tuned tts, do not give it full boost when the fuel level gets low, you can get a lean condition which even the Motronic cannot save.........the engine will go bang.

Once I had it down to this: "---" when I drove into my basement garage at night.

Next day I drove to the fuel station that is like 1/2 mls away. puh!

I had this problem twice a week when I drove 90 mls early in the morning on one of the best Autobahns and 90 mls back at late night. A good part of it was at max speed and sometimes a 996tt joined me.
The last 10 mls I always had to drive extremly slow just to get home with the last bit of fuel.

I recently read somewhere that the 1000+ HP Veyron could run at top speed for somthing like 12 minutes before it would run thru a tank of fuel. I think this is simple math... assuming our cars have roughly the same size tank, our 500 HP cars can go a whole 24 minutes at full chat. Probably not the most economical way to drive.

I got like 6 to 7 mpg when driving a bit faster.

In fun per minute it is very economical.

Ironic this topic is brought up and I don't want to get off topic but I took my car out yesterday for a short drive (only driven 500 miles in the first 11 months of ownership). My low fuel light was on and as I was getting on the freeway behind a Cayman S, I jumped on it a little and as it boosted a bit, the engine cut out. It was almost like a loose turbo hose, but I checked them when I got home and they were fine. Could the engine have cut out due to the possibillity of low fuel because otherwise it ran fine? Thanks

Steve, the size of my cojones is only due to lack of use. Standard tank size is 19.5 gallons. Stummel, how much fuel did you put in when you filled it then? I'm assuming after that run the computer was figuring distance to go with a low mileage rate, mine was using about 23 mpg after a long quiet run on the freeway. Bradford, if you let your car sit with a real low tank for a long time you can get a lot of moisture in the gas and that might account for the cut out. The light comes on with about 4 gallons left so, unless you'd run it quite a bit after it came on, low fuel shouldn't have been your problem.

I ran my car to "---" on the last session of a DE at Watkins Glen. I pitted early and headed it to the village to fill up, thankfully the village is mostly down hill from the track. During the DE my mileage drops to 7-8 mpg but once off the track it climbs back to 20-21 mpg. I don't recall the number of gallons it took to refill.

After these sessions less than 1 litre was left. The computer is quick with correcting the mileage rate for the miles to go. It adjusts quite fast if you drive really slow and steady.

Also with full speed I think it will not calculate the miles to go with 7 mpg.

The algorithm to calculate the miles to go will vary the weight of the current fuel consumption in order of the fuel left. That is, if your tank is full it will calculate with an average mileage rate. The less fuel you have the more it will calculate with your current mileage rate.

CJ,

The little lever under the turn indicator lever changes the display. On those displays that are resetable (average mph, mpg, miles traveled, etc), you pull the little lever towards you and hold for about 3 or 4 seconds until it resets. Or were you just kidding with us?

no i am serious, I never got any info on that. all i know is that when i turn off the key it says how many miles my current 'trip' is, which for me is how many i've driven since I bought it. I will play with that when i get back.

sort of same topic, but on my old 850 turbo volvo my mom ran it down to 2 miles to go one time...the turbo wouldn't go on if it was lower than 50 miles to go.

If you had fuel in your tank for 11 months without fuel stabilizer, some of it is could now be in form of varnish that can clog your fuel lines which can cause a lean condition that could cause serious damage to your engine.

500 miles is unfortunately 3 tanks of gas . So no, the gas has not been in there for 11 months.
