Post Price differential?

Gentlemen, as you may know Karen and I are researching the purchase of a nice 993 TT. My question is this:
Is there a big market differential between the "Left Coast" and the rest of the country?
People out here seem to be asking in the 80's yet I see cars with mileage in the teens in the Midwest and East Coast in the 60's. Now obviously I haven't seen those cars and I realise that these are "asking prices" and condition, options and history are critical, but I would appreciate any insight into this.
Obviously we wpould like to get something local, but........

Thanks,

Scott

Historically, this has not been a big factor, with one exception. In past years, when folks were getting ready to store the car for the winter (Nov or Dec) often they would realize they didn't really drive the car in good weather and put it up for sale at a lower price.

I scan the obvious places and have not seen the cars you describe, except one TT in the 60's - It had a 'marked' title which means major damage but not salvage. When I look at the ads (Rennlist, Autoweek, Autotrader) I don't see much difference in price vs. location. I am curious as the where you found ads in the 60's. If these are OK cars, even in need of minor work, they would be good deals. You can ship cross country for ~$2k (we can talk about this Sunday, if you want).

Also, beware of using CarFax as a final judge on history. I helped a friend check a local TT. It came up clean on CarFax but the Porsche dealer computer showed it as salvage. We even found the salvage yard that resold the car. I would still invest in CarFax, but Rusnak should be able to run a VIN for you as well on any car you find.

Hey Jack,

Did you end up selling that beautiful 993TT?

Congrats on the new 996TT! Is the new turbo a much more capable car like the automotive journalists suggest?

Yes, Anir, my baby has been sold to a worthy and appreciative fellow renlister--Vinrey. I'm going to miss that Ferrari Gelb beauty.

As for the 996TT, it's a very capable car,and given all the handling aides, much easier to drive fast and at the limit as compared to the 993. For me, that's a good thing, to which DJ, who's seen me drive, can attest. Of course, the refinement, handling aides, better (different) ergomonics, more spacious interior, etc., of the 996TT are viewed as negatives by many long time Porschefiles. Given my current "rolling stock" portfolio, the new Turbo is perfect for me. BTW, tremendous power potential, given its 4-valve and water cooled head design.

As a side note, I may be joining you soon in the SMG ranks! Hope you're still enjoying it.

Ahh... say it ain't so, Jack! I never got to drive that thing, let alone even get a ride in it, but it certainly was a beauty.

Now that you've got all those computers and sensors to help you out, are going to drive this car fast? <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
