Post 1850 miles in 3 days-Trip report

Just finished a three day trip in my '96 tt from Albuquerque, NM to Sheridan Wyoming. Went up to see my sister graduate from high school.

First out of town drive in my car since I bought it three months ago (49,500 miles at time of purchase from local dealer, car now has 51,850). Wanted to take the car out of town sooner, but was scared (wanted to drive it in town for a while, just to see if everything was ok).

Armed with a set of belts, and bunch of tools I set off for Sheridan. Both legs of the trip were about the same, left a 5 am and arrived a 5 pm, (12 hours, with two stops for fuel) 860 miles each way. The car ran great, AC nice and cold, 25 mpg @85 mph. At speed the temp was always just about the 1/3 mark, nice and cool.

My only complaints were ergonomic, I'm 6' 1" and there's not go much room to move your legs around (had the cruise control set about 80% of the time)on a long trip. The side speaker acts as a "cheese grater" on you leg after a while, and the center console, although nice looking hits your other leg.

I was surprised, no noticeable oil consumption.

Also, surprised on how well the motor can maintain speed (85 /- 1 mph) in 6th gear (cruise engaged)during the steepest grades (Raton pass, between NM and Colorado).

In the middle of no where (

The rest of my report:

In the middle of no where (between Chyenne Wyoming and Sheridan Wyoming), I was cruising along about 85 when a black 993 turbo was closing on me at about 95 mph. I sped up to about 110 to see if he wanted to play, he didn't. No other porsches spotting on the trip.

It's always a nice surprice how much people in smaller towns appreciate a car like ours, they actually go out of their way to make compliments or stop to ask questions about the car.

I lent the car to my sister to drive to her graduation. She said she got seven new boyfriends on the way.

Sounds like a great trip, how many supercars could you do that in? I'm long legged too and usually tuck my knees up and rest my elbows on them when the cruise is set.

Get these cars up to 130 -140 and they feel right at home, stable and nicely in the sweet spot in 6th around 4750rpm. Not meaning to cause offence just my general annoyance that the Germans get to do this legally on a daily basis <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

I agree with you, 85 mph is slow for a tt, I was passed by a quite a few of econo box cars/mini vans, going 90-95 along the way, but was worried about getting a ticket (nothing ruins a road trip for me like thinking about a ticket I just got) . Did a few short bursts up to 120-130 or so (no one around), most of the excitement was during an occational pass of someone ( 80-100 mph), the ability of our cars to accelerate at speed, always surprises me and my victim.

Jon,
I drove me new2me TT back from Denver last weekend, 1740 miles. Very uneventfull, indeed fun to speed up a bit when clearing traffic. No oil consumed.

I alternate stretching my left and right leg between the brake and accelerator. A lot people west of the Missisip respond positively to the car. Once on this side noboby seems to bother or care....

Jon-

Small world--I live in Big Horn and work in Sheridan. I even know of your sister because she applied for a scholarship from the hospital where I am chief of staff. You're lucky to have spotted a TT in Wyoming--I've not seen one in years. I lurk here as I'm hoping to find a nice 993TT. I did catch a glimpse of some sort of 911 pulling into a motel on N. Main this past weekend--I flashed him from my 540i, but don't think he saw. That wasn't you was it?

Anyway, glad to hear you're enjoying your car--your sister must have been thrilled to get behind the wheel!

Continued pleasure for you-

Andy

Andy,

No I don't think it was me (you saw), I was there the weekend of May 25th. Beautiful state, Wyoming, next time I'm there I'm going to head west from Sheridan thru the big horn mountains, and visit the Buffalo Bill museum. Should be a nice drive.

Jon
