I need comments. I'm thinking of selling a show class 70 T Targa (original) and a show class restored 64 C Coupe, adding cash to get either a 993 TT or early 997. What are the pros and cons of each.

o modern interior and ergonomics
o nice performance (if an S model)
o

pros of 993TT
o classical beauty
o "intimate" interior
o gobs of hp... even more can be added
o better resale value
o don't see them everyday
o tend to be driven by serious enthusiasts, not folks that want to be seen in a porsche

I agree with steve, especially about the resale. in 3 years, the same price 997 will be worth less than the 993TT, which for great examples the depreciation scale is very flat.
The 997, with lower mileage, will be easier on you mentally and won't be as specific to certain climate changes (a/c not so good in the 993), less prone to out of pocket expenses (under warranty) and more civilized (navigation, etc). Some will argue that it handles better, being Rear wheel drive.
The 993 tt will be faster, hairer and scarier but at the same time have loads of traction. If you're a collector type than the real choice of maintaining a low mileage example of a 993TT makes it more of a priority than the relatively common 997.
Having driven both of them in the last few weeks, I'm buying a 993TT. of course next year I'm getting a 997 Gt3. I like the rawness of the 993 and I want a RWD more hairy chested version of the 997 than just a regular 997S.

I have both. Very different. The 993 TT (mine is an S) is a special drive - not everyday. Low mileage, very inexpensive to own (virtually no depreciation) and a total blast to drive on beautiful days on uncrowded back roads. Actually worth more now than it cost me. The 997 is terrific everyday. I fully plan to drive it 50k miles in four years. Likely much more expensive to own. I got it to drive - I have too many Porsches I don't drive often enough, and I wanted one I would obsess less about. If you are selling the early 911 and the 356, you may want something about which you will be less compulsive. Clearly the 997 is not a collectible car, while the 993 TT might be. The problem, for me, with the 993 is that one begins to enjoy NOT driving it, keeping the milege low and it in perfect condition. I guess it depends on how you'll be using it.

Based on your prior porsche ownership you appear to like show cars. The classsic looks of the 993tt will not disappoint you.

993TT - you are buying a low production end of an era icon. All of the 959 technology finally rolled into (semi-affordable) production.
997 - You are buying a nice new car. Sure it does everything a little better that the 996 while looking nicer too. But you are still getting an uninspired motor and an uninspired gearbox and are going to look like all everyone else who feels the need to buy a new porsche. (if you're waiting on a 997gt3, that might be a different story)

OK, now that you've gotten the advice you knew you were going to get on this board, what are the guys over on the 997 board saying?

I started to become obsessive the day I got it, and now I'm terrified of day2day stuff like minor dings, mileage etc. It's not healthy.

Mine's Artic Silver w/ Boxster Red. I try to not be too compulsive. Actually put 7k miles on it in two years. Even drove it (briefly) in the snow once. Still, moisturizing the leather headliner and the a/c vents and dash requires a certain commitment.

Rufus has 106,000 miles and has clear bra. Bottom line... I can drive the snot out of this car and not worry. And, if you've ever seen the magic of a good paintless dent repair guy, you can stop worrying about the occasional (but still annoying) door ding. Dang... I'm more than just slightly nuts about all 993s in general, and Rufus in particular.

Seriously, 'either or' there's one answer... if we're talking about 'and' or an RT12 (or maybe RKompressor) then it might be up for discussion...

Thanks to all for comments. This is a great board. I've taken the 997 off the table. I'm a bit compulsive about my cars and will maintain to a high level and drive them only occasionally. My choice now is whether to sell the 70 Targa and the 356, add cash to get a TT or, sell the 356, add cash, keep the 70 Targa and get a NA 993. Having an early 911 and a 993 would be good. How much will I miss the power of the TT? Can anyone comment on the driving differences between a TT and a 4S?
