You live in New Hampshire. Why worry? "Live free or Die". I lived there for 12 years and never had a cat on my car. It passed inspection every year with no trouble.

Not sure of any HP/Torque figures, but with g-tech my 993tt was repeatedly a few 10ths quicker 0-60 with same launch, same road, same temp, etc.- after the FVD's were installed. Throttle response was also improved. IMHO, it is a good performance mod for the 993tt.

OK, I told Racers Group to go ahead and get the FVD Cat Bypass instead of trying to cut / weld / modify the Fabspeed product to remove the cats. Cost with the Fabspeed unit will be just a little less by the time you add in the labor (almost $600 parts and $800+ labor vs. $1860 bolt in). Hope they can get it there by Thursday to get my car done this week....

I have heard people say this mod provides as much as 20 HP. It is possible - but when you are adding 20 HP on to 480 (or whatever) it is much more difficult to notice than when you add 20 HP to a 210 HP car. My 930 puts out about 480 HP and I can tell you that my 993TT has more top end (and is over 300 pounds heavier). So I would not be surprised if my 993TT put out 520 HP or so. The cat pipe mod certainly makes the car sound nice and does add responsiveness.

Bob - any chance of before and after dyno number on your car?

No Varioram: Huh. Well what do you know. I feel sheepish. (That's what Mark told me when I bought the car Oh well, the bump where the turbo's USED to kick in is gone. I found myself hitting the rev-limiter in second gear a couple of times as the power delivery is so smooth. The engine feels and sounds so relaxed.
I've never had the car dyno'd, but Mike guesstimated that I might have about 500 hp now. To be honest I don't want any more horse power. There I've said it. (Do I have to turn in my Tim Taylor award?) The car is off the freakin' hook as it is. All I wanted was reduced lag and better drivability and I got that in spades.

"I don't want anymore horsepower". hahahahaha. You're hooked baby. It might as well be crack. Sure, try denial; I ain't buying it. Just wait until the next time Mike comes up with a 50 HP thingamajig. You'll be standing in line, just like the rest of us.

RS shifter and alum pedals going on my car when Mike does the wiring harness recall.

Hey Steve - Scott's car is set up very similiar to mine and I agree with him. My car is almost not worth driving on the street anymore because it is so fast driving it around town is a let down (unless you want to risk jail time). I estimate about 500-520 HP and that is enough.

Arghhhhh. Scott, you got the last in country cat bypass pipe apparently from FVD. Both FVD and Cargraphic need to source one out of Germany. My car will now be tied up for an extra week at Racers Group waiting for one of these to get shipped.

To pass the time, I spoke to Bob Holcomb in Scottsdale. He told me that one of the biggest choke points on the 993TT is the collectors on each exhaust manifold prior to entering the turbo. He can machine a new free flow / larger collector assembly onto your original exhaust that will match up perfectly with the turbo. So, my manifolds are on the way to Bob.

Racers group was running a dyno test today with the Unichip and the bigger turbos with the cats still in place. I'll post some results later, although it is apparently out of fuel on the top end and needs bigger injectors (already installed the pressure regulator) according to the air/fuel meter.

Scott,

We will see how it turns out. I'll be able to take some pictures to post when it gets back of this modification. Bob charges $500 to do both exhaust manifolds. In light of everything else, what the heck.....

Bob: By the way I was talking to Mike Schatz about exhaust mods in general the other day and he mentioned that a certain amount of back pressure was very beneficial to the 993TT BEFORE the turbos. He said that due to valve timing overlap, if you reduced the pre-turbo backpressure too much that you would get fresh charge scavaging. That is to say unburned mixture would be sucked right out the exhaust before being burnt, resulting in a loss of power.
POST turbo he told me was another matter all together and less backpressure was a Very Good Thing.
I'm no expert by any means (see varioram issue), but I thought I'd pass the info along as you are researching this stuff right now.

Kevin,

I've been talking to Joe at Fabspeed about his cat bypass. He has a complete, bolt-in cat bypass (I guess like the FVD and Cargraphics) but its pricey at about $1500. He also makes a "do-it-yourself" kit, that requires cutting and welding so that flanges can be installed on the cats and the exhaust system. THEN its a 30-minute swap job.

The DIY kit is around $500, so to that add your muffler-guy's labor. My guy said around $200 to $300, and he'll deliver the car with the cats on it, and hand me the bypass pipes. This is required by Calif law.
