Default Filters versus over fill: White smoke showdown

I've just recently started to see a small amount of white smoke on startup that lasts about 30 secs. Both pipes. Had an oil change 30 days ago and had OEM filters put on. Smoke just appeared yesterday for first time and only happens in morning. I also have GT2 check valves and 996 sump lines. The oil level shows 3/4s when operating temparature and maybe a tad higher (as in just under top line) when really hot after aggessive driving. Only thing that has changed in last two days versus 28 or so after change but prior to smoke is installation of a new ecu but since it's running lower boost and the car runs better with the new software, it seems unlikely that could be causing the smoke.

Searching prior threads indicates oil level at 1/3-1/2 is best so question is whether over fill at 3/4s will give the smoke. Have an experienced p-car shop so improper filter installation is unlikely but you never know.

Even Porsche filters are bad sometimes and even experienced techs can put them on too tight. I would swap out the engine filter before I tried anything else.

911/Q45: Thanks for your response. Any thoughts on whether I should try to remove some of the oil or should I just let it go at 3/4 mark. It's headed to the track next weekend so the oil will have plenty of heat cycling.

You should be fine at that level. If you change the filter, you'll lose enough to bring you down to the recommended level anyway.

I'd run it at 1/3.. Do what it takes to get it down to that level.

Thanks Kevin. Looks like I'll be sucking out some oil with my trusty turkey baster and tube.

A faster method is to remove a drain plug out of your turbocharger sump tank.

Just to provide closure to this thread, the smoke has now cleared. I changed the filters and the smoke disappeared. I also drained some oil using Kevin's suggestion to drain the turbo sump tanks and it now sits at the 1/3 mark with new filters and runs like a charm. Thanks to all for your input.
