Any differences on 1996 and 1997 ?

Any what is a price range that i shuold be looking at for a 96 with mid 30,000 miles ?

Simon,

Check out 993tt.com for lots of great info and a section on "buying."

I would imagine that a well cared for '96 with 30k would be somewhere in the 60s. An excellent, well optioned car could find the 70s.

Good luck in the hunt. Looking is half the fun!

http://www.993tt.com/ here is the link.

Dependent on whom you speak with, demand is high and supply is pretty low. What that will translate into this summer is an unknown. If you find the right car with the miles you want and its mech. sound I would suggest you make a move. If not one of retail players will beat you too it. As lower mileage cars dry up in the market its going to effect 30-40k mile cars in some respects.

Did you ever find a quick summary on 1996 vs 1997 differences?

o 1997 has a single chipset ECU, which more aftermarket tuners know how to upgrade. However, there are now some options for upgrading the dual-chipset 1996 ECU. The 1997 ECU is a direct replacement for the 1996, if you want to switch.

o 1997 has a slighlty stronger first gear shaft. Neither can tolerate a side-step clutch launch of the car (the AWD gives GREAT traction, and bends that shaft).

o 1997 has upgraded turbo inlet hoses (orange ends). An easy upgrade for a 1996 also.

o 1997 has a quieter brake reservoir pump. You can add a "quiet" kit on the 1996.

o a few, very minor cosmetic changes that I can't remember.

There are fewer 1997 TTs than 1996, hence a bit scarcer. They tend to demand a few thousand more dollars than the equivelent 1996 car.

My advice... buy the one you fall in love with, and disregard the year.

This did not happen until a few months into the '97 production. My early '97 and a bunch more that I had in the shop did not have the Orange end hoses which are FAR superior to the '96 ones.

Personally I'd be open to considering higher mileage ones as well, maybe up to 60K. Sometimes the less frequently driven ones are those that develop leaky seals etc.

You will be incredibly happy once you find the right one. There are a number of bad ones out there so take your time to find the right one and get a PPI by a reputable place.

Well there are also a few other changes.
1 - you can put a Porsche car seat in the front seat and disable the airbag on a 97 but not a 96.
2 - the 96 had crest wheel caps while the 97 had turbo centers.
3 - the 97 had a motion sensor for the alarm built in and a map light above the inside mirror as one unit. The 96 had just a light.
4 - the 96 had a weaker clutch slave cylinder than the 97 - ie more of the 96's had problems than the 97's if I remember correctly.

My 96 came with turbo logo wheel centers and has no map light above the inside mirror.

Mine too.

Also, I seen to remember the previous owner of mine got his clutch slave cylinder replaced after a good bitching under warranty.

My 96 993TTis the best car that I have ever had but have upgraded to a 97 ECU so that we could tweak more performance. The 96 ECU is not programable. They are awesome cars. You will love it Im sure. Good Luck.

remember, you must plan on doing suspension if the shocks are original - about 4-5k
In short, budget another about $5k for random cleanup of leaks and other small stuff that needs to be replaced.

Trj,

"The 96 ECU is not programable. " Not exactly true; there are a few tuners that can reprogram the dual chipset 1996 ECU. Kevin is among them, but there are others.
