Being able to program the early ECU, removes the added cost of buying a '97 ECU, at an average of $1,600.00

The solution is not new, but getting the product made has taken some time and money. Since the stock Intel chip is soldered to the main board, the proceedure now is to install a chipset socket.
Sorry for question, perhaps it's me not understanding completly.

The intel chip is it a ROM/PROM/EPROM/EEPROM/Flash EPROM or perhaps something else?
Is the intel chip through-hole mounted or SMD mounted?
If you're setting a socket there, I presume the new chip will not be the same as the old one?
How will you replace the spot for the old chip with a socket?

If replacing the chip are you buying the chip on vendor or spot market?

Cheers

I am setting a socket to provide a new board that houses the new EPROM with a few other goodies like encryption..
