Question Stainless Steel Brake Hoses - Quality differences?

received an offer from fvd germany for stainless steel brake hoses for a good price.

is there an improvement with the 993tt at all? dont know what stock hoses are made of. after all i like the brake feel of the tt very much.

are there different quality steel hoses available? i think i read that somewhere.

I replaced mine with FVD steel lines prophylactically because my OEMs were 9 years old.
Nice firm pedal feel. I inspect them every time I flush my brakes prior to a track day.

I,m with Scott on this one. Just replaced the 10 year old ones on my RS for braided stainless ones. Brake pedal is now firmer and far more consistent when being used hard, and has reduced travel
Original pipes are made off some kind of synthetic rubber ? The braided ones look more like nylon.

Stummel:

There are indeed differences in SS lines. One should only buy the ones that meet the US DOT spec.

That said, there are no real world advantages for SS lines on an ABS-equipped car unless its a dedicated race car that requires the impact protection afforded by these things. Of course, old rubber lines do deteriorate and should be replaced when they are more than 7-8 years old.

Remember, brake line pressures at the calipers are managed by the ABS ECU & controller so SS lines do not offer the same advantages found with the '89 and older 911's.

Steve - I've always operated under the premise that TUV approved parts are subject to equal if not better standards than DOT. Is this wrong or is there something about brake lines that is the exception to the rule?

thanks

Hi Doug:

I'm not familar with the TUV's specifications for SS lines.

Before the DOT wrote a performance standard for these lines, it was "open season" on these products and a big Caveat Emptor. We always replaced them biannually on all street & race cars.

With the DOT specs on these SS Lines now, its easier to determine what you are getting, although one should be careful about WHO makes them for you. Regardless of manufacturer, installation is the key for reliability and these products do not suffer fools in this regard.

Great thread and a certain winter project............

Steve, what brake lines would you advise using for street and/or track use?

I like the OEM rubber lines for these cars for street/track usage.

That offer just went out to US customers today as well, for anyone interested. I have been running our lines on my TT for around 15K miles and look and perform good as new. They are TUV approved as well, which in most cases is much more strict than DOT (However like Steve I am not positive what the differences are on brake lines).
Regards,
Evan
