Get PSS9 coilovers. I just went for a ride in a car equipped with them today. Unfrigging believeable.

Hi:

If I might offer some suggestions,.....

Before you spend a dime on a suspension upgrade, make a determination about what you want the car to do that its not doing at the present. Then, go for a ride some 993's equipped with different suspension options so you see for yourself what it feels like. Everyone's assessment of ride quality is different and you really should make that determination for yourself.

As "robroy72" said, PSS-9's make a HUGE difference in handling, especially if your stock suspension has over 30K on it (worn out shocks). Further, they are infinitely adjustable (within reason) for ride height and those 9 shock settings offer a lot of flexibility in handling/ride quality.

Hope this helps,
Never, ever buy used factory shocks no matter how cheap they might be.

Current options are:
(1) to get some euro spec springs from a fellow rennlister, (not sure what $ to offer for them w/ 10K miles on them) and use the current shocks(41K on them)/new shocks?
(2) get an "Andial developed Bilstein/Eibach sport suspension complete (shocks, springs and sway bars) for 993tt. Used 1000 miles only," for $1200 from the rennlist classifieds.
(3) go PSS9's.
Unfortunately I don't think anyone has a 993TT around here in Mid-Michigan with any of the above.
Hear what you say about needing to spend some seat time. Not sure if (1) or(2) are such bad options though.

IMHO:

1) This is a poor option unless you install a new set of Bilstein HD's. The factory Monroe shocks are shot by 30K.

2) If it really does have only 1K miles, thats not bad although I've always had sagging problems with Eibach springs and will not use them on a customer's car again.

3) Good choice, as well as long as you understand what they do and what the ride quality will be. I'm aware of the roads in Michigan and that why I posted what I did up above,...

There are a good number of 993's with PSS-9's in your area and if you show up at a PCS Driver's Ed event, I'm pretty sure that you can get a ride.

Just my opinion, of course.

You'll notice that none of Steve's recommendations necessarily involve sending him money, which is why his opinions are so valued on this forum.

Where can someone get a good deal on some PSS-9's?
Can any shop put them in correctly?

I would care more about getting the right setup rather than a great deal. A couple of hundred dollars over the long run are not that important, compared to the service that the right setup will provide you. IMHO of course.

There is a shop called Rennsport Systems who knows a thing or two about suspension.. They have them available there and they are a Sponsor. Their email: porsche@rennsportsystems.com They will steer you in the right direction as to what you need , you can't go wrong.

They might be far from you though for installation.. Good luck.

Wini:

Bilstein doesn't offer a specific "Sport" shock for the 993: they offer the HD and the PSS-9 which is the defacto Sport Shock option,....

Acropora:

If I might add,........Jean offered you some REALLY sound advice; you should be concerned about getting the right setup and support and not focused on who has the cheapest stuff. I can point you to an installer in Ann Arbor.

Steve,

Can you describe a little more what the PSS-9 ride is like? My car has 30K mi and I've been thinking the ride is a little springy (I've only owned it for about 3k mi). However, I took it to local Porcshe specialist (not a dealer) lately asking about new shocks and/or PSS-9s and he said the car rides like it should. He also discouraged me from doing PSS-9s because he said the car is so well balanced stock that if you mess with one thing you'll soon find that you screwed up some other aspect of the car's handling.

Houston always seems to have road construction going on and I frequently hit bumpy patches. Are PSS-9s uncomfortably stiff on a rough road?

Also, do you know anyone near Houston that is a knowledgable installer of PSS-9s?

Careener:

Honestly? Ride quality assessments are terribly subjective and this is something that you really must judge for yourself. Everyone has different ideas about what constitutes; soft, firm, and stiff based on past experiences.

I would strongly disagree with a shop or dealer that told you that "the car rides like it should". Thats nonsensical,.... These cars are heavily balanced toward understeer and while it might suit the shop personnel that told you that, its nowhere near optimal for best handling. They certainly will NOT "screw up other aspects of the car's handling". If it were me, I'd find another shop who is more enlightened.

IMHO, PSS-9's are firm, but NOT harsh and tire pressures & brands make as big or bigger difference in ride quality. PSS-9's can be adjusted to ride very nicely but they will be firmer than stock or M030 suspension systems.

I do know people in the greater Houston area that can install and setup these up properly.

Just to add my 0.02c worth in....

Steves advice is VERY sound. There are LOTS of variables: tyre pressure, tyre type, age of shocks etc. and even riding in someones car with the same gear can produce 2 different feelings. I have just bought some JIC coilovers from a fellow Rennlister (they are ONLY 1500 miles and 3 months old) and am prepeared to take my chances with them - it also has to do with the fact that i cant get a drive here in a car with PSS9's or otherwise. Mike said they were too stiff for him which in my mind says they could be just right for me! - If they are too stiff - i will sell them on and look for something else - remember it is ALL subjective - but saying that PSS9's get a great wrap here!

I will re post when i get mine in and let you know how stiff they are!!!

Steve and everyone else - I would like to lower my car. I know that can be accomplished with the PSS9's but are there other alternatives? What about different springs? My car is stock. It seems to ride ok to me but I don't take it to the track and drive it hard. I just want the lower look and if the shocks need to be changed......then that is fine too.

My car is about like Careener's. It has just under 30K on it and when I asked about the condition of the shocks that are on the car I was told they are fine.

Just fishing for some input.

Thanks,

Take a peek at www.autobahntech.com, and see if they still have a lightly used Roock suspension kit for sale. This looks like a revalved and custome sprung PSS-9 system, but I'm not sure. They offered it to me for $700. I have no recommendation for this setup... just pointing out a possible low cost solution that may (or may not) work for you.
