Default RUF 993 Turbo R upgrade

Hey guys, I've spent a lot of time around RUF lately. Their 993 business in Germany is every day. You won't see a shot of their manufactuing area without a 993 in the picture. Alois Ruf, the man himself, did a half way walk around my TT and told me I need to do it. Just like we were talking about tires or air filters.

Until now, the 993 Turbo R package was either done by them in Germany, or done by them over here. Or it wasn't done.

As I type, Van Halen's 993TT is in route for the Turbo R upgrade and Paul Allen's 993 TT left for Dallas this afternoon for little Turbo R too. I guess I'm going to join them. Any comments?

Given the fact that your close in proximity in comparison to the rest of us, yeah go for it, you have been infected. I'm just wondering how much something like that goes for if you wouldn't mind sharing in a PM. (if would want to)

I get those same symtoms when ever I'm over at Kaspers (IA) place in KC.

Also, was it Alex or Eddie Van Halen that owns the tt

I'm going to have the RUF conversion done when funds allow. If I recall it's about 17,000 euros? 490BHP & suspension upgrade. Certainly not bad value and you have their excellent reputation to back it all up.

Perhaps one of the more knowledge turbo people here can fully disect what the Ruf turbo R package includes. It seems $25k is very high for this performance.
Im using the Ruf turboR performance as a benchmark/goal, but it doesnt seem all that different than getting programming and hybrids turbos (im not sure about the cams). Perhaps im wrong and the system is incredible .. Id love to know.

The only way to know for sure is to compare 60 to 130 MPH times. See the thread I started on this subject. My car is a Ruf Turbo R. It has not been beaten by any other aftermarket tuner with just turbo and ECU changes. The engine just cannot flow enough air to get this performance (and reliability) without changing the exhaust, cams and fuel pressure. Also, Ruf worked with Bosch, the original ECU manufacturer, to develop his software to match the mechanical changes.

Does that include Ruf's suspension upgrade? From reading their website, suspension upgrade is mandatory.

Rob,
Ruf has never been about being the least expensive. You will always be better off - financially bolting on a bunch of performance parts. This is not what Ruf does. When you buy a real Ruf or get a conversion you are buying an entire package that has been tested and proven. All you have to do is page through Excellence to find a ton of aftermarket companies making all sorts of parts to bolt on with all sorts of HP claims.

All I can say is drive a real Ruf someday and you will understand. To this day my buddies 1997 CTR2 Sport is the best all around car I've ever driven. I have driven cars with much more HP but they do not compare. I have always thought Alois Ruf got it right with his vision of a vehicle. It is not just bolting on a bunch of parts to build max HP.

I've had the wonderful opportunity to have lunch with him when he delivered my friends car. It was an experience I will never forget. A Ruf makes my 02 996TT feel like a VW. I only hope to someday be able to fly to Germany and have him build one for me. I can bolt on parts to give me much more HP that my friends CTR2 but it will never be a Ruf.

While Ruf does make a great package you can duplicate the package using reputable manufacturers for usually half the cost. Don't get me wrong it is a great car obviously.

SPR, I BELIEVE YOU ARE OFF BASE ON YOUR ESTIMATES, YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT BUILD
A "RUF KILLER" FOR $12,500. THAT WILL BUY YOU GREAT PERFORMANCE, BUT YOU ARE NOT
GOING TO GET INTO SEPARATE CAMS, SUSPENSION, AND ALL THINGS NEEDED FOR THAT AMOUNT.
I BELIEVE IT WOULD COST YOU CLOSER TO THE $25,000-$30,000. I DO KNOW FROM RECENT
EXPERIENCE AND I EVEN BOUGHT SEVERAL THINGS USED FROM FELLOW RENLISTERS! THIS IS
MY OPINION OF COURSE. ALL THE BEST TO THE PURSUIT OF HORSEPOWER!!!

I don't know if $25K is too much or too little (doesn't matter to me, I can't afford it), but if you were to do it yourself, assuming similar parts, wouldn't it cost you about:

turbos $4000
tuning $1500
suspension $3000
oil cooler $1500
clutch $500
exhaust $2000
cams $1000
labor $5000
misc $1500 (hoses, fittings, fluid changes, etc)

Total: $20K.

I didn't include the cost of the "head" because I wasn't sure if that means porting of the head, or what...

If I could afford it, I'd probably pay the extra $5K to "do it right" and hope to get some of it back at the increased resale value.

Off Topic: Did you post some pix of your car on the "show us your turbo" thread a few months back. If not I would like to see them over there on that thread.

Now back to the topic, no hi-jack intended. Am I mistaken, or don't a few owners around this board have Ruf conversons that can can give some insight.

Guys, thanks for the replys. The obvious thing to do is run the TT down there as fast as I can before they change their mind. I don't know why I'm resisting so much. And now I'm bothering you...

Tom were you asking for a picture of my car? It's bone stock US with '04 TT wheels.

And Hatchy, the heads are simply blueprinted.
