Don't know about 993 TT's but on my C2 Turbo it was right around $300 for the compression and the leakdown, hope that helps.

What is a sign that a leak down/compression test is needed?

Usually a leakdown is done at your major service intervals IF you want to know the condition of your valves guides, valves, and or piston rings.. You definately want to have this done when you want to purchase a car.

I've had a couple of leakdown tests done over the past 3 weeks and you can expect to spend $400 to $500 dollars on a TT PPI which should include a leakdown if you are looking at a car that is close to needing a major svc and the car looks like it will be a keeper have them do the svc while they have the car apart for the leak down so you dont have to pay labor to take it apart agin to do the svc.
