Tranny rebuild?
My synchros are going out (have to basically rev match when I down shift once tranny is warm). I want to replace the glass synchros with some steel ones, has anyone done this? What's the cost? Am considering re-gearing as well, but wife has me on a budget. Any recommendations on who to go to?
Thanks

Contact Paul Guard, he manufactures quality gears for our cars.. He can give you some suggestions on the leading tranny folks in the US..

Give Brian Copans a call @ 513-779-3302. He is the guy Porsche Motorsports and private teams use at all the major races (i.e. Grand-Am, AMLS, etc.). He has his own shop in Cinncinnati, Ohio and he only does Porsche transmissions! I had him rebuild my tranny w/ all steel synchros. He has every gear ratio possible, if you want to go that route?
Let him know Tim Rooney from Columbus, Ohio sent you.

I think it was around $1800....once you got the tranny to him. I had him replace the reversing lever and shaft b/c they were broken which is common in our cars. He put in billet replacement parts so the tranny is now bullet proof!! I think I only had him replace 2,3,4 synchros to steel b/c those are the gears you most often are going b/w on the track. It's best to call him, he will not steer you wrong.

A second recommendation for Brian Copans. Just be patient with him as he is a one man shop and his race customers come first. He is very honest and reasonable, not something you find everywhere nowadays. Tim's quote sounds good, the 2nd gear synchro is the pricey one and the others are not bad in comparison.
BTW he re-built my race car tranny almost 5 years ago and it is still perfect, probably have to freshen up the LSD and take a look at it after this season.

I just had the steel synchros from Paul Guard transmission done on my car$175 each for 3, 4, and 5. I also needed a few miscellaneous parts as well as a gasket and seal kit. I used a couple sources for availability reasons, the parts bill was about $2300. Regearing is a whole different matter, quality gearsets were quoted to me in the $500-750 per gear range.Jean recently posted great research regarding regearing our cars.

Hatchy, you cannot go wrong with Brian, he is a top notch builder, I spoke to him following the same advise I got from Greg and Tim, and he is really amazing.
The only downside is that he is literally overwhelmed, he does not see the sun for days in a row and now with Daytona and ALMS aproaching I doubt he will be able to spare anytime from his bread and butter. But worth giving it a try.
If that does not work, you can try a few great others, like Steve W., Chris Cervelli or Rick Deman, depending where you live, all of them ex-racers (and current) and very experienced.
Good luck.
Seege, thanks.
